Blotterazzi by beautyblender review and photos.

blotterazzi

As you may already know, I am a huge fan of beautyblender products.  IMHO, the original pink egg is the only tool that is able to blend-out my Estee Lauder Double Wear Foundation to perfection.  Their micro. mini incarnation (reviewed here) has the ability to meld concealer on skin seamlessly.  Needless to say, when their newest creation, blotterazzi by beautyblender ($20 for 2 sponges) was introduced, I knew I wanted–nay needed–to review this beauty.  Will this latest installment live up to the beautyblender rep or fall short on its claims?  You’ll see.  🙂

Blotterazzi Performance:

  • The purpose of blotterazzi is to act as an alternative to blotting papers.  The sponges are designed with beautyblender’s signature soft latex-free material, pink coloring and egg shape.  At first glance, the thinly cut sponge seems flimsy, but the resilient material used on blotterazzi resembles that of the original beautyblender.  The tapered design is ideal for wrapping around one’s finger to access hard to reach areas on the face.  I must admit, I found the shape, size and girth perfect for accessing the corners of my nose and under eye area.
  • Personally, I’m predisposed to dry skin with an oily T-zone that blooms by late afternoon.  On a number of occasions, I did use blotterazzi, as directed, with minimal difference in my appearance. Despite the actual thinness of the sponge, the material simply was not absorbent enough to act as an effect “blotting” tool.  Pressing the sponge firmly on the affected area for 5-10 seconds did absorbed some oil, but did not completely mattify the skin.
  • I can see this product working for those that do not want to add extra product (aka: powder) on the skin, or for those that desire a slightly dewy finish rather than matte.

Blotterazzi Packaging:

  • The accompanying compact is relatively thin, houses two washable/reusable sponges and a sizable mirror with a protective plastic sheet between the sponges.  The vented openings on the bottom is a nice touch, by allowing the sponges to “breathe” while contained.
  • I found the compact to be extremely lightweight and thin enough to fit in my small handbag; however, the overall appearance of the compact does not substantiate the cost.  The beautyblender logo could have been discretely placed on the bottom corner sans the words blotterazzi by beautyblender scrolled across on the cover.
  • The stark white compact coloring could have also been styled with the same pearlized gray coloring of the outer box.  Just based on appearance alone, this compact could easily be mistaken for the drugstore variety.
  • I realize these are rather superficial issues, but I believe packaging plays a huge part in pricing, and by golly, for twenty dollars, I want nicer packaging.

Blotterazzi Other Use:

  • As always, my curious nature did get the best of me, and I have since discovered another use for this seemingly average product. When used dampened or dry, blotterazzi makes an amazing tool for blending out concealer–dare I say, even better than the micro. mini.
  • The thinness paired with the oversized design are ideal for individuals with larger fingers and hands (like myself).  For perfectly blended results, I simply wrap the sponge tip around my index finger and grip the body of the sponge securely in my hand.  Patting motions work wonderfully to conceal veining and blemishes and the press and roll method is ideal for setting concealer with any powder of my choosing.
  • Since this discovery, I have consistently used blotterazzi for all of my concealing needs.

  • As the above photo shows, blotterazzi’s substantial design is large enough to grip in the hand and the pointed end sits perfectly against hard to reach areas.

beautyblender Comparisons:

blotterazzi

  • As the above photo demonstrates, the beautyblender siblings are more robust and 3-dimensional than blotterazzi.
  • The original beautyblender is excellent for heavy liquid/cream foundation formulations.  When dampened, the sponge blends-out the heaviest formulas for skin-like results.
  • The micro. mini is cute as well as functional.  This sponge is ideal for concealer application and functions along the same lines as her older sister.  The only issues I can verify, is the small size can sometimes be a bit pesky to grip properly and the chartreuse coloring stains easily.

THE VERDICT:  If makeup could talk what would it say?

Makeup would tell you blotterazzi by beautyblender is not a must-have.  If you are one that suffers from oily skin and are looking for an alternative to blotting papers (for a matte finish), this product may not be for you.  However, if you are looking for an amazing tool to blend out and set concealer, then you may have hit gold (slight exaggeration–but you get the point 🙂 ).  Until next time, be well, stay safe and be happy.

The beautyblender micro.mini review and photos.

The beautyblender micro.mini.

By now, everyone has tried the infamous original beautyblender.  The neon pink malleable sponge works to blend out the heaviest foundations to sheer perfection.  It was only a matter of time before the company realized a smaller more compact version needed to be created.  Enter the beautyblender micro.mini ($17.95 USD/2 sponges); this little egg-shaped nugget is a must-have for true concealer junkies–or anyone that wants their under eye area to look flawless.  🙂   I hope you enjoy!

The Pros to the beautyblender micro.mini:

  1. Tapered tip design is ideal for under eye concealer application.
  2. Non-latex foam with “open cell structure” is durable and melds pigments to skin seamlessly.
  3. Ideal for travel–compact shape fits in various sized makeup bags.
  4. Enlarges to twice the original size when wet.
  5. Washes easily in seconds and can be stored anywhere to dry.
  6. Due to the micro size, the sponge dries in less than an hour.
  7. Slightly more malleable than the original beautyblender.
  8. Using stippling motions conceals blemishes like no other.
  9. The bottom side can be used to apply highlighter to the tops of the cheeks and the center of the nose.
  10. Also suitable for light powder application under the eye area, using the press and roll method.
  11. I’ve also used the base to apply a light dusting of blush to the apples of my cheeks.
  12. Made in the USA.

The Cons to the beautyblender micro.mini:

  1. The neon chartreuse color is lively, but is prone to staining, especially when used with highly pigmented concealers.  I would have preferred a black version.
  2. Mini’s size maybe a bit too small for someone with larger fingers.
  3. Can seem like an extra step (you have to remember to immerse the sponge in water and squeeze out excess water) in the mornings when time is of the essence.
  4. The company claims the mini can also be used for contour application.  IMHO, the micro size makes contour application a bit awkward–I prefer the original BB for this purpose.

Size Comparison:
Dry beauty blender micro.mini vs. a dry original beautyblender.

  • Admittedly, when I received my beautyblender micro.mini I was taken aback by just how teeny tiny it was compared to the original beautyblender.  However, putting aside all of my preconceived notions, this little guy reaches areas on the face the original could not and really does blend out concealer to perfection–all the while providing fantastic coverage.
  • I prefer to place a small amount of concealer on the back of my hand, dip the tip of the beautyblender micro.mini directly into the concealer and dab the product on the desired areas.
  • As you can tell by the above photos, the size of the micro.mini doubles in size when wet.  The soft dampened sponge possess an airy quality that effortlessly stippled the pigment on the skin, resulting in flawless coverage.

Under eye concealer, highlighter and powder blush were applied with the beautyblender micro.mini.

  • As stated earlier, the beautyblender micro.mini can also be used to apply a highlighting shade.   For the above photo, I utilized the rounded base of the mini to apply my Estee Lauder Crystal Baby Highlighter (reviewed here) to the top of the cheeks and bridge of my nose.  I also dipped the base of the sponge into my Giorgio Armani Sheer Blush 10 Beige and applied the color to the apples of my cheeks.
  • BTW, I had a slight blemish on the tip of my nose and a few dabs of concealer on the beautyblender micro.mini obliterated any signs of that pesky bugger.  When I removed my makeup at night, my husband looked at me and pointed to the blemish and asked, “Was that there before?”  Nope–but thank you for noticing.  Ahhh…the power of the MINI 🙂

  • My little BB micro.mini dries nicely in my ring holder, which incidentally holds everything else but my rings.  🙂  Frankly, this little guy can be perched on any surface to dry.

THE VERDICT:  If makeup could talk what would it say?

Makeup would tell you the beautyblender micro.mini has managed to really impress me despite my initial doubts.  The signature soft beautyblender texture and amazing blending abilities is very much present in this tiny offering.  If you are someone that considers concealer the most important step in your makeup routine, then this newest little creation is for you.  Taking a few extra moments to wet the sponge in the mornings, will pay off in a beautiful complexion for the rest of the day.  Until next time, be well, stay safe, and be happy.
