Admittedly, I do not need another red lipstick.  In my defense, I can only “judge” the quality of a lipstick brand by testing the darkest shade in the range (my rule).  “Nude” colored lipsticks are notoriously short-lived, but colors that fall in the “red” color family are more complex and play by a whole different set of rules. My theory is, if the darkest color in the bunch performs well, then the rest shall follow (easily said, since I do not wear many “nudes”).  With that being said, when Bite Beauty Port Cashmere Lip Cream ($28 US/7.48g) caught my eye, I knew this color would make the perfect specimen for my latest brand exploration.

Bite Beauty has created a new formula of lip creams amongst a sea of liquid lipstick flooding the market.  According to Sephora:

The cream-to-powder delivery system is achieved with an advanced formulation of butters, waxes, and oils that all have different melting and absorption rates. The balanced combination of waxes and butters with the powder texture of silica develop a creamy and buttery application that quickly absorbs into lips while the powdered pigments remain on the surface to leave a matte finish.

The Pros:

  1. Highly pigmented formula.
  2. Will not feather/bleed into fine lines if a lipliner is not used.
  3. Cream-to-powder formula leaves a matte velvet finish.
  4. Incredibly light-weight formula.
  5. The most moisturizing matte lipstick I have ever worn.
  6. The natural delicate sweet flavoring is very pleasant.
  7. 93% of the ingredients are naturally derived.
  8. Minimal transfer of color when drinking.
  9. The amount of product (7.48 g) is exceptional compared to most higher-end brands (6 g).
  10. If used correctly, the brush head can be manipulated to apply the color evenly on the lips.
  11. Does not collect around the corners of the mouth or flake off when the color has worn off.
  12. Bite Beauty Port Cashmere Lip Cream is a beautiful raspberry-red color that will suit warm and cool skin tones.
  13. Reapplication of the color does not thicken over an existing layer.

The Cons:

  1. Not as long-lasting as advertised.  Full color saturation lasted 2½ hours without any eating, drinking or speaking.
  2. The formula does not adhere evenly on the wand, presumably due to the drier texture.
  3. Several passes with the wand is required to coat the lip area.
  4. The flexibility of the brush head hinders a smooth application (Shiseido Lacquer Rouge brush head would have been ideal).
  5. Limited color selection; only six shades.
  6. A mirror is definitely needed to apply this formula.
  7. The formula separates from the inner tubing.

Application:

The application of this chestnut does take a bit of patience, due to the flexibility and length of the tip.  I find the cream-to-powder formula does not glide on as smoothly as my Guerlain Rouge G L’Extrait or my beloved Shiseido Lacquer Rouge.  Granted, I do not like the fragrance in Guerlain’s lipsticks, but there is no denying the brilliance of the formula.

I apply Bite Beauty Port Cashmere Lip Cream by laying the brush flatly on the lips, starting from the inner corner of the mouth and working the brush toward the center.  At this point, turn the applicator head on the side and use the tip to define the edges of the lip.  In my experience, I find that several passes of the wand are required to deposit opaque coverage.  Another alternative is the use of a lip brush.  Personally, this option is not realistic; I rarely use a lip brush when I am out and about.

THE VERDICT:  If makeup could talk what would it say?

Makeup would tell you despite all the pros, Bite Beauty Port Cashmere Lip Cream raises some doubts.  I love the color, the natural ingredients, the lack of artificial fragrance and the amount offered, but the pesky applicator paired with the cream-to-powder formula does concern me.  Initially, I was quite impressed with Port, but after a couple of days, the formula has become stiff and application has become problematic.  The formula seems to have thickened since my early use.  I’m going to try to exchange this tube for another color in the line, with high hopes my tube is a faulty fluke.  In the meanwhile, have you tried any of the Bite Beauty Cashmere Lip Creams?  Be well and stay safe.
