Marc Jacobs Remarcable Full Coverage Foundation Concentrate review.

Marc Jacobs Re(marc)able

As you my have surmised from my previous posts, I have been on a hunt for a new foundation.  I know many people keep several formulations (heavy, medium and light) handy to accommodate for mood or season.  However, I am of a different mentality; I prefer to use one foundation, at a time, to the bitter end.  I am a firm believer in fuller coverage formulations.  The high pigment factor present in these types of foundations can easily be altered to satisfy my every whim and desire.  Marc Jacobs Remarcable Full Coverage Foundation Concentrate 54 Honey Medium ($55 USD/.75 fl.oz.) has proven to be one of the most innovative and versatile foundations I have come across.  “Attention Cover Fx Custom Cover Drops–you have been officially replaced.”  I hope you find this helpful.

Marc Jacobs Re(marc)able

Marc Jacobs Re(marc)able

The Pros to Marc Jacobs Remarcable Foundation:

  1. Lightweight formula.
  2. Concentrated pigment provides instant coverage.
  3. Small amount needed to achieve desired results.
  4. Synthetic brushes work beautifully to blend foundation on the skin.
  5. Can be mixed with your primer of choice to dilute the consistency and coverage–my preferred way of using this foundation (see below).
  6. Skin is mattified and coverage lasts all day (12 hours) on my dry skin and semi-oily T-Zone.
  7. Covers my green veining at the bridge of my nose–concealer can be omitted.
  8. Leaves skin looking flawless.
  9. No oil breakthrough around the T-Zone area by midday.
  10. Does not oxidize on my dry skin.
  11. Thick frosted glass bottle is sanitary and sturdy enough for travel.
  12. Although I still would have preferred a pump, the stick applicator (as opposed to a dropper) makes for easy access to the foundation and assures minimal product is deposited on the skin.
  13. Comes in 22 colors to accommodate all skin tones.
  14. Formulated without parabens, fragrance, sulfates, or phthalates.
  15. Made in Italy.

The Cons to Marc Jacobs Remarcable Foundation:

  1. Foundation must be shaken, otherwise separation occurs and coverage is compromised.
  2. Moisturized skin is a must–formula adheres quickly, can feel drying, cling to dry spots and settle into pores otherwise.
  3. Due to the formulas excellent adhesion properties, a quality makeup remover and facial cleansing routine must be implemented in the evening.
  4. Due to the exceptional coverage, skin can appear flat–bronzer, blush and highlighter must be used to restore a semblance of vitality.
  5. If used as directed (one drop for each area of the face) the coverage can look too heavy for my liking.
  6. Due to the instant coverage, it is imperative one select the correct shade, otherwise this foundation will photograph poorly.
  7. Does not layer well–not that multiple layers will ever be needed.

Marc Jacobs Re(marc)able Foundation

  • As specified at the opening, Re(marc)able needs to be shaken in order for the formula to incorporate properly.  Failing to do so compromises the wear, coverage and longevity. If you choose to get a sample from Sephora, ask that your sample be given in one of their mini bottles as opposed to their standard sample pot.

Remaining product after foundation has been applied.

  • Truth be told, when I first tried Re(marc)able I did not like it; the coverage looked too heavy and mask-like.  It was at this point I was starting to doubt my whole “buy only full coverage” mantra.  However, since Re(marc)able’s consistency reminded me of Cover Fx Custom Cover Drops, I decided to use it in the same fashion as my drops, in hopes for more favorable results.
  • Incorporating a small amount of the foundation (take the amount of product on the applicator’s bulbous tip and swirl it in your hand) with Mally Perfect Prep Poreless Primer seems to produce a more viable outcome.  The opaque coloring and cream like texture of the primer reduced the intensity of Re(marc)able just enough to glide on the skin like silk, yet, provide excellent coverage, adhesion and adequate blending time.  If you are one to favor layering, then this method is for you.  My skin literally looks flawless the entire day, sans patchiness or afternoon oil break through.
  • Very little product is needed to achieve desired result.  The last photo above shows the remaining product after applying one layer of foundation to the face and neck.  For the record, I use Shiseido Foundation Brush to apply Re(marc)able.

Long-Wearing Foundation Comparisons:

Marc Jacobs Re(marc)able 54 Honey Medium.

Marc Jacobs Re(marc)able 54 Honey Medium.

  • Marc Jacobs Re(marc)able has the highest concentration of pigment than all the others.  The most impressive quality is how well this foundation lasts throughout the day.  54 Honey Medium may look too dark, but this golden shade magically adjusts to my natural coloring.  The coverage is so beautiful many people do not think of asking about my makeup, rather insist I divulge my skin care secrets.
  • Cover Fx Custom Cover Drops provides medium to full coverage.  They are very similar in consistency to MJ, but surprisingly the level of pigment is not as robust as Re(marc)able.  The shade range was always a bit off–I had to invest in two colors to find an acceptable match.  In addition, the poorly designed packaging is this foundation’s true downfall.  I foolishly went through three bottles, all resulting in wasted product seeping out of the opening.
  • Estee Lauder Double Wear has a more liquid consistency with medium to full coverage.  This was my long wearing foundation of choice for many years.  However, my issue with Double Wear is that of comfort.  On my dry skin (excessive in the winter time), this formula had an uncanny ability to suck any and all moisture from the skin.  As the day would progress, I was plagued with a tightening sensation on my face.
20151014_091458

Remaining foundation after two passes with a wipe.

  • The above photo shows how well my sample swatches fared after trying to remove them with a wipe. Re(marc)able was the clear victor and did not want to leave the spotlight, Cover Fx came in second, with Double Wear wiping cleanly off.
  • This would also be a good time to stress the importance of proper makeup removal at night. Personally, I use my dual action makeup remover to clean off the initial layer, then follow-up with a quick rinse with my facial soap and conclude with a healthy dose of gentle scrubbing with my Clarisonic Mia.

THE VERDICT:  If Makeup Could Talk what would it say?

Makeup would tell in no uncertain terms, this foundation is truly remarkable.  The coverage, packaging, longevity, versatile usage, color range and even the play on the word re(marc)able has solidified my love for this product.  This is the ideal foundation for those who demand exceptional performance with little to no touch-up required throughout the day.  Finally, a product that delivers on its claims–who wouldn’t want that?  🙂   Until next time, be well, stay safe and be happy.

Cover FX Custom Cover Drops review and photos.

Cover FX Drops

Cover FX Custom Cover Drops G40 and G60.

There is no denying the stunning spring/summer collections currently out on the market, but lately my attention has been squarely focused on my complexion.  My basic mission was to find a liquid foundation for the warmer months that had a lightweight texture, fantastic coverage and able to last the day with minimal fading.  I believe CoverFX Custom Cover Drops ($44 USD/.05 fl.oz) delivers on all of my demands.  These unique drops lets you customize the coverage with any catalyst (primer, oil, moisturizer, etc.) of your choosing.  Genius?  I believe so.  🙂  I hope you enjoy.

Cover Fx Drops

Cover Fx Drops

Cover Fx Custom Cover Drops G40 and G60.

The Pros to Cover Fx Custom Cover Drops:

  1. Drops can be added to any liquid skincare (primer, moisturizer, oils, sunscreens etc.) converting these products into foundation to suit individual tastes and needs.
  2. Cover FX Custom Cover Drops.

    Cover FX Custom Cover Drops.

  3. Lightweight texture feels extremely comfortable and looks natural on the skin.
  4. Does not emphasize dry spots or settle into pores.
  5. Stored in a glass bottle, which is sanitary and chemical-free (some may not like this feature).
  6. Color range is categorized by Pink (4 shades), Neutral (13 shades), and Golden (7 shades).
  7. Concentrated pigment means little product is needed for immediate results (see above swatches).
  8. “Flash fusion technology” formula allows pigment to bond instantly with any liquid.
  9. Formula must be shaken to incorporate the pigment.
  10. Once the pigment sets, it lasts 10+ hours on my dry skin.
  11. A synthetic brush (MUFE 110 reviewed here) is ideal to blend this product on the skin.
  12. Vegan friendly, paraben, fragrance, gluten, mineral oil and talc free.
  13. Made in Italy.

The Cons to Cover FX Custom Cover Drops:

  1. Although the drops do mix unbelievably well with any liquid, on my dry skin, the best results were achieved when a cream-like medium was used (Cover FX Illuminating Primer).
  2. If accidentally spilled, the concentrated pigment does stain clothing and does not wash out.  I have a pair of pants that will never be the same.
  3. The tonality of the shades are a bit off (I need to mix two shades)-the neutral shades (my normal range) were way too peachy and the golden shades seem too yellow.  An in-store visit is highly recommended for color matching.
  4. Every time the bottle is shaken, pigment collects around the opening.  This not only wastes product, but the messy outcome is unsightly and annoying to clean on a daily basis.
  5. Half the size of a standard foundation.

Cover FX drops

Cover FX Illuminating Primer with 2 drops of G40 and 1 drop of G60 incorporated.

  • Cover Fx Illumating Primer is silicone-free and makes the perfect accompaniment for the drops. The two products seem to glide on my dry skin easily and set within a couple of minutes.
  • When combined with silicone primers, I found Custom Cover Drops’ application was a bit streaky and uneven.  I may be a bit bias here; my dry skin requires a more emollient liquid to seem hydrated, therefore my medium of choice will always be moisturizers.
  • When combined with my Argan Oil, I found the coverage to be sheerer than with a denser liquid.  I also noticed the pigment appeared darker than anticipated.  Of course, these results are very personal and will vary based on skin tone, texture and body chemistry.
Cover FX

Cover FX Custom Cover Drops packaging.

  • As mentioned, the packaging is not my favorite. Even though the dropper does dispense the product nicely, the fluid pigment somehow always manages to collect at the opening.  IMHO, a specially designed pump would have been more efficient and sanitary.
Cover FX drops

Wearing Cover FX Illuminating Primer with 2 drops of G40 and 1 drop of G60.

  • Three drops, in total, seems to provide me with the coverage I need.  I have experimented with using four drops and the coverage was indeed “total.”  There have also been days when these drops even sufficed as my concealer.
  • My Lancome Teint Idole 24H Foundation has served me well over the years; however, by late afternoon, I was noticing oil break through on my T-Zone area, despite my severely dry skin.
  • Custom Cover Drops longevity is off the charts–even on a challenging 10 mile bike ride, the coverage never faltered.  This formula would surely be ideal for oiler skins.

Ingredients for Cover FX Custom Cover Drops:

May Contain: Titanium Dioxide (CI 77891), Iron Oxides (CI 77491, CI 77492, CI 77499).

THE VERDICT:  If makeup could talk what would it say?

Makeup would tell you Cover FX Custom Cover Drops have become my foundation of choice.  The adjustable coverage, amazing longevity, and lightweight texture have impressed me beyond belief.  As mentioned, once the right medium is found, the coverage is amazing–do try it and see for yourself.  Until next time, be well, stay safe and be happy.

Diorskin Star Sculpting & Brightening Concealer review, swatches and application.

Diorskin Star Concealer 003 Sable/Sand.

I have never been one to wear concealer on a daily basis.  The thought of applying another layer of makeup to an overly sensitive area, never appealed to me.  After all, the products I encountered have either been too heavy, or too light, too emollient, or too dry, I could never find the right product with the right consistency–that is, until now.  Diorskin Star Sculpting & Brightening Concealer ($36 USD/ 6ml) has changed my unenthusiastic outlook.  Ladies, this is the concealer that has been missing from my makeup life–this is the peanut to my butter, the milk to my shake, the salsa to my chip…you get the idea 🙂

Diorskin Star Sculpting & Brigthening 003 Sable/Sand.

Diorskin Star Sculpting & Brigthening 003 Sable/Sand.

The Pros to Diorskin Star Sculpting & Brightening Concealer 003 Sable/Sand:

  1. Extremely pigmented.
  2. Silky smooth consistency glides on the skin and blends out seamlessly.
  3. Very little amount is needed to achieve amazing coverage.
  4. Natural semi-matte finish (due to the titanium dioxide and silica) looks like second skin.
  5. Incredibly hydrating without any creasing.
  6. Can be blended with fingers or a synthetic brush.
  7. Unbelievable lasting power..seroiusly does not budge throughout the day.
  8. Adorable plastic packaging is compact and easily portable for travel.
  9. Five shades provided to accommodate a variety of skin tones.
  10. Compatible with my Guerlain Powder Foundation.
  11. Formulated without fragrance, mineral oil or parabens.
  12. Made in France.

The Cons to Diorskin Star Sculpting & Brightening Concealer 003 Sable/Sand:

  1. Blotchy results can occur if the conceler is left unblended for too long.
  2. Colors are a bit deceptive.  002 was originally the shade I wanted to get, but it turned out to be more of a highlighting shade.  003 swatched a bit on the dark side, but once applied to the eye area everything melded beautifully.  Try before you buy.
  3. Can be easily overdone if a heavy hand is used during application.  Take it one dot at a time.
  4. Can attach to dry spots if skin is not properly moisturized before hand.
  5. Formulated with silicones.

Highlighting the green veining around the bridge of the nose (right eye).

  • My purpose for purchasing this color was to conceal the green veining next to the bridge of my nose.  I know, the general consensus when it comes to concealers is to use one shade lighter than our foundation coloring, but that method was only adding to my sallowness.  Finding a color closest to my foundation actually concealed my problem area, rather than highlighting the issue.
Diorskin Star Sculpting & Brigthening Concealer 003 Sable/Sand

Applied Diorskin Star Sculpting & Brigthening Concealer 003 Sable/Sand unblended.

  • For the above photo, I dispensed a small amount of concealer to the back of my hand, and used my finger to apply a light coating directly over my veining issue.  This method ensures one does not accidentally deposit too much product, to the affect region all at once.  My issue is not that serious, but for those who have severe discoloration, applying light gradual layers will yield more natural and blended results.
Diorskin Star Sculpting & Brigthening Concealer 003 Sable/Sand

Diorskin Star Sculpting & Brigthening Concealer 003 Sable/Sand completely blended.

  • For the above photo, I blended out the concealer with my finger, but a synthetic brush (Sonia Kashuk Concealer Brush) works just as well for natural results.

Diorskin Star Sculpting & Brigthening Concealer 003 Sable/Sand with Guerlain Lingerie De Peau Nude Powder Foundation in 03 Beige Naturel.

  • For above photo, I added the lightest dusting of Guerlain Lingerie De Peau Nude Powder Foundation in 03 Beige Naturel to set and incorporate the color with the rest of my makeup.  Not bad, if I do say so myself.

Comparison Swatches:
Sunday Riley Dry Touch Concealer 125W, Edward Bess Soft Beige Concealer, Diorskin Star Concealer, Estee Lauder Maximum Coverage Foundation 03 Creamy Vanilla.

  • Sunday Riley Dry Touch Concealer was purchased with the same intent, but as you can see, this cream formula has a strong pink undertone that did not mesh well with my coloring.  In addition, the lasting power was not that impressive and the texture felt heavy.
  • Edward Bess Soft Beige Concealer was sold to me by the man himself (who I must say, is a true gentleman) to act as a highlighting shade.  Even though the lasting power is wonderful, sadly the color was too light for my purpose.  Furthermore, the texture is not as lightweight as Dior.
  • Diorskin Star Sculpting & Brightening Concealer 003 Sable/Sand seemed too dark, but when applied to the desired area, the color magically adjusted to my coloring.  If you can tell, the texture is also the lightest of the bunch and this formula adheres to the skin beautifully.
  • Estee Lauder Maximum Coverage Foundation 03 Creamy Vanilla is just as pigmented as Dior, but the texture is heavier and drier.  This was my go-to concealer on the rare occasion I actually wore concealer, but now Dior has dominated the playing field.

  • Diorskin Star Sculpting & Brigthening Concealer can be found at Nordstrom, Sephora, Bloomingdale, Saks, Dior.com, or any location that sells Dior Cosmetics.

THE VERDICT:  If makeup could talk what would it say?

Makeup would tell you Diorskin Star Sculpting & Brigthening Concealer 003 Sable/Sand is the best concealer I have ever used.  The hydrating formula, creamy texture, natural results and superb lasting power make this an all around winner.  This is the nut to my bolt, the cherry to my sundae, the milk to my shake…I could go on.  Try Diorskin Star Concealer and see for yourself and this may very well be, the best to your friend.  Yeah, I had one more in me 🙂  Be well, stay safe and be happy.

Guerlain Lingerie De Peau Nude Powder Foundation review and swatches.

Guerlain Lingerie De Peau Nude Powder Foundation.

Guerlain Lingerie De Peau Nude Powder Foundation.

Lately, I have been experimenting with several foundation formulations.  My journey down the yellow brick road led me to Diorskin Forever Flawless, passed Dior Star Fluid Foundation, fast approaching YSL Fusion Ink and ultimately ended with three clicks of my red heels straight to Guerlain Lingerie De Peau Nude Powder Foundation ($66 USD/ 10g).  This unassuming foundation has exceeded all of my expectations and then some.  The buttery smooth texture and flawless results have me wondering how I ever bypassed this marvel in favor of liquid formulations?  Ladies, this is a true game changer for me; I have a feeling, I’m not in Kansas anymore 🙂

According to Guerlain:

Guerlain has created its first compact powder foundation so light that it blends seamlessly, like a second skin.
The Bio-Fusion micro-mesh, a combination of stretch fibres and textile proteins of natural origin fuse with the epidermis for an optimal distribution of pigments.

Composed of hyaluronic acid, Lingerie de Peau compact powder foundation protects the skin’s moisture in order to maintain its suppleness and softness from morning to-night.

Guerlain Lingerie De Peau Nude Powder Foundation.

Guerlain Lingerie De Peau Nude Powder Foundation sleek compact.

The Pros to Guerlain Lingerie De Peau Nude Powder Foundation:

  1. Amazingly smooth texture results in a beautiful matte/satin finish.
  2. Finely milled powder looks natural and can be built-up for flawless results.  Pores…what pores?  I was naturally born this way 🙂
  3. A primer was not needed for my dry skin.
  4. Lasted perfectly for eight hours.
  5. No additional powder needed to mattify the skin.
  6. Surprisingly moisturizing for dry skins; skin does not feel tight throughout the day.
  7. Can be applied with the sponge provided or any kabuki brush for heavier coverage (I use a small Kabuki brush from my Dior Bronzer).
  8. Can be used as a flesh tone eyeshadow for a simple and refined look.
  9. Photographs beautifully due to the lack of SPF.
  10. Refillable pans provided, however from what I can gather, available only through House of FraserHarrods and www.feelunique.com.
  11. Beautiful sturdy magnetic compact is high quality.  The thin packaging fits perfectly in any handbag. The large distortion-free mirror is ideal for travel to apply a full face of makeup.
  12. The compact flattens out completely for easy product accessibility or easily props up for personal use.
  13. Comes with a velvet pouch to protect the compact.
  14. Pleasant light fragrance is imperceptible after a couple of minutes.
  15. Formulated without parabens, sulfates, or phthalates.
  16. Made in France.

The Cons to Guerlain Lingerie De Peau Nude Powder Foundation:

  1. Limited shade range (especially at Sephora).  I had to purchase two shades to match my olive skin tone. (03 and 04).  I would advise a visit to the Guerlain counter to see all the available shades (16 in all on Guerlain.com) and to get properly matched.
  2. Slight oxidation/darkening by the sixth hour.  This will vary depending on skin type, I like the effect some may not.
  3. Can look overdone/caky if too much product is applied.
  4. Compact is a fingerprint magnet.  In this case, I really do utilize the velvet pouch.
  5. Formulated with silicones.

This is the type of powder that becomes creamier the more it is buffed into the skin.  I prefer to use a kabuki brush and buff a light layer all over the face and then reapply as I see fit.  The sponge provided does work beautifully if you have the need for more precise application.  The corner of the sponge works perfectly to reach the under eye area.

Guerlain Powder Foundation also eliminates the need for a primer and finishing powder.  I find prepping my skin with my moisturizer 15 minutes prior to foundation application suffices for all day wear.  Call me crazy, but since utilizing this powder, my recent acne outbreak has completely cleared-up.  I suspect the hyaluronic acid may have had something to do with my facial recovery.  The lack of additional products on my skin (primer and finishing powder) may also have benefited my congested complexion.

THE VERDICT:  If makeup could talk what would it say?

Makeup would tell you Guerlain Lingerie De Peau Nude Powder Foundation is the best powder foundation I have ever come across.  Just imagine, if the Wicked Witch of the West would have found this product–she wouldn’t have been so cranky, winged monkeys would have never been conjured up and her green coloring would have been magically concealed.  Who says makeup can’t solve problems and bring happiness?  Hop, skip or jump down to your local Guerlain counter and see for yourself.  Be well, stay safe and be happy.

Top Ten Makeup Repurchases.

Top Ten Makeup Repurchases.

Top Ten Makeup Repurchases.

In a sea of cosmetics goods, what products truly stand out as being worthy of repurchase?  Taking a cue from the Pinksith, I decided to put my spin on her top ten series by posting my Top Ten Makeup Repurchases.  These products have proven to work well for me and have become a part of my daily routine.  The first installment will be on makeup repurchases, followed by skincare, and lastly nail care. Needless to say, everyone will have a difference of opinion based on personal experiences.  I hope you find this helpful.

Top Ten Makeup Repurchases:

Estee Lauder Double Wear Foundation.

Estee Lauder Double Wear Foundation.

1.  Estee Lauder Double Wear Foundation:  (purchase here) I enjoy all of the Estee Lauder foundations, which is odd considering I have extremely dry skin. I have gone through three bottles of DW, two DW Light, and currently one Maximum Cover (will last a lifetime considering only a dot is needed).  I find all the formulas to work if the skin is well moisturized prior to application and if minimal product is used. This foundation lasts all day and coupled with a dampened synthetic brush (I prefer a brush over the beauty blender) will give you a flawless finish.

Hourglass Veil Mineral Primer.

Hourglass Veil Mineral Primer.

2.  Hourglass Veil Mineral Primer:  (purchase here)  I have gone through three bottles of this primer in the past three years.  Very little product is required for this light-weight formula to work its magic.  Veil Mineral is essential in the summer months.

Bioderma Makeup Remover.

Bioderma Makeup Remover.

3.  Bioderma Makeup Remover:  (purchase here) I am aware this is not makeup, however a makeup remover is just as important as the makeup we put on our faces.  I use this on a pointed Q-Tip during makeup application to gently remove any mistakes and to give a sharp edge to my eyeliner.  I appall the price of this remover, but admittedly it is one of the best.  Bioderma has a non-greasy, non-irritating, fragrance-free, non-rinse formula.  I have tried Vichy’s 3-in-1 version of the miscellaire formula and it does not compare.  Ordering from a reputable site is always advised.  Beautyhabit.com (here) also sells Bioderma.  I acquire mine (five bottles later) from a pharmacy in NYC.

Red lipstick.

Red lipstick.

4.  Red Lipstick:  This was a toss up between lipsticks and highlighters.  Since I have over twenty red lipsticks and ten highlighters in my collection, the red lipsticks were the obvious winners.  Generally speaking I repurchase red lipsticks over and over again from every brand.  As stated in my Estee Lauder Ruby Glow review (here), the right red can brighten up the sallowest complexion.  Red lips yield a minimal sophisticated look: mascara, blush, bronzer and a dynamite red…DONE!

L'Oreal Telescopic Mascara.

L’Oreal Telescopic Mascara.

5.  L’Oreal Telescopic Masacra:  (purchase here) I should receive a share in the company’s stocks based on the countless tubes  I have consumed and recommended.  I love the small brush, long handle and the defining and lengthening aspect of this mascara. Telescopic does flake on me a bit by the end of the day, but you cannot beat the price, availability, and performance of this staple.  Mary Kay Lash Love Lengthening Mascara (reviewed here) has since replaced this gem, but I will always recommend L’Oreal Telescopic Mascara as a drugstore favorite.

Inglot AMC Gel Eyeliner.

6.  Inglot AMC Gel Liners:  (purchase here) If you have not tried these liners, what are you waiting for?  The formula is highly pigmented and the staying powder is unsurpassed (especially for the upper waterline).  I have gone through 2 pots of the #90 Matte Brown and prefer it over the #77 Black.  I find the #77 Black troublesome to remove at night and if applied to the corners of the upper lash line, it does tend to smudge.  The price/amount ratio is also a very attractive feature ($12 US/5.5 g) compared to higher-end brands.

Clinique True Black cream liner.

7.  Clinique True Black Cream Liner:  (purchase here) This little guy is the creamiest and blackest gel liner (other than AMC) I have found that lasts all day on my peepers.  Two pots later, I still stand by the claim it surpasses Bobbi Brown Black Gel Liner and MAC Blacktrack Fluidline.

MAC Prep-n-Prime Lip.

8.  MAC Prep-n-Primer Lip:  (purchased here) Contrary to what the sale associates say at the MAC counters, there is a proper way to use this product.  When I first purchased Prep-n-Prime Lip I dismissed it as just an over-priced lip balm.  Until, I left it on for longer than normal (5 minutes) and then applied my lip color.  I discovered the slight tacky texture, held on to the lip color longer and really did prevent my lipstick from bleeding out into my fine lines. Two tubes later, I cannot wear red lipstick/gloss without this primer.

EOS lip balm.

9.  EOS Lip Balm:  (purchase here) The packaging of this little macaroon is fun and easily distinguishable in an overloaded handbag.  I use the EOS balm before I apply a matte formula lipstick, before I go to bed, for my children and even my husband keeps one in his car (the blue one of course).  You can now find a pack of five at Costcos.  The 100% natural, 95% organic claim far surpasses Chapstick which is comprised of some of the most unnatural ingredients on the market.  This is my choice of “lipstick” in the afternoon and evening time.  How many have I gone through?…I lost count.

Favorite Lipliners.

10.  Lipliners:  If you are ahead in the age category, a lipliner is a must.  They prevent your lipstick from bleeding into your fine lines and help prolong the wear of your lipstick.  I prefer MAC Prolong Wear formula, MAC Creamstick formula, and Dior Lipliner formula.  When I visit a CCO, I make it a point to stock-up on the Prolong wear pencils (if they have my color).

THE VERDICT:  If makeup could talk what would it say?

Makeup would tell you to find products that work and stick to them for as long as possible.  My Top Ten Makeup Repurchases have been in my makeup vault for the last three years.  My mother on the other hand, has used the same hairspray for the past forty years…yikes, forty years of brand loyalty…that’s crazy talk.  What are your favorites?  Be well and stay safe.

Current Makeup Products!

Current Makeup Products:

This post is dedicated to the makeup products which are currently in my rotation.  As all makeup addicts can attest, our attention is constantly swayed by the “new kid” on the makeup block.  A monthly update is not only advised it is required!!  Enjoy.

Starting from Left to Right:

  1. Too Faced Shadow Insurance in Lemon Drop:

Pretty good eyeshadow base, not the best.  Still looking for the one.  Currently testing a new one.  Will keep you updated!

  2. Laura Mercier Baked Blush Bronze in Ritual (reviewed here):

My favorite bronzer…wish they would make this a permanent item in the line.

  3. Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powder in Diffused Light (reviewed here):

Really like the way this livens up my sallow complexion!

  4. MAC Mineralized Blush in Pressed Amber (discontinued):

Browny rose blush, also used as a blend out color for a smoky eye and as an all over lid color!

  5. Juicy Beauty CC cream in Warm:

The color is too dark/orange and the coverage is minimal, but makes a satisfactory primer.

  6. Koh Gen Do Moisture Foundation (seen here):

This mineral based foundation has great coverage, moisturizing and is HD, however, it does not last all day for me.

  7. Estee Lauder Maximum Coverage foundation (seen here):

High coverage and super long lasting, however, very drying for dry skin.  Add some moisturizer to this or mix with another moisturizing foundation of your choice!

  8. Burberry Eyeshadow in Pale Barley (reviewed here):

No fuss, no muss color.  Great on days when I need to brighten my tired eyes!

  9. YSL cream liner in Gold Star #07 (seen here):

I use this little pot of gold as an eyeshadow, base color for powdered eyeshadows, and for my inner waterline liner!!!  Cannot say enough good about this product!

  10. MAC Soft Ochre Paint Pot:

This is an eyeshadow base color to even out my eyelid coloring and brighten any powder eyeshadow that is applied on top.  You will still need a general base like TF to prevent creasing.

  11. It Cosmetics Hello Light Creme Illuminator:

Great base for any powdered highlighter.

  12. MAC lipliners in general:

I love Chicory (pencil form) and Red Enriched (Cremestick liner..automatic) and Nice n’ Spicy (Prolong Wear liners)..

  13. Shiseido Lacquer Rouge:

Beautiful liquid lipsticks which are moisturizing, long lasting and a great value.  These are great as toppers for drier formulas.  Review coming soon!

  14. Shu Uemura eyebrow pencil in Seal Brown:

Great match to my eyebrow color, very subtle.

  15. L’oreal Telescopic Mascara:

Great for lengthening and separating the lashes.

  16. Prestige My Blackest Lash:

Great for volume.  I like to add this mascara as a second layer after L’oreal.

  17. Physician’s Formula 2-in-1 Pen Eyeliner:

Fast, cheap, and easy liner.  Great in the cooler months, summer time requires a waterproof formula.

THE VERDICT:  If makeup could talk what would it say?

Makeup would tell me I am a very fickle and highly distractible woman.  My loyalties are constantly called into question when it comes to makeup products.  I can’t help it!!  Hence the monthly updates 🙂  Be well and stay safe.

Foundation, Foundation…Wherefore art thou Foundation? Foundation Selection Guide.

IMG_4184

Wearing Estee Lauder Maximum Cover #03 mixed with Koh Gen Do #123

Foundation.. you illusive and bewitching siren!!!   You can bedazzle the human mind, heart and soul!!  Oh how I long for you in my life but alas…shade, formulation, and brand confound me!  What am I to do?  Oh stop begin so dramatic!!!  If it is an answer if you seek, you shall receive it…if you are open to its arrival!!  WOW!!!!   Add philosopher to my list of things that I can DO!!  Foundation is not as mysterious as one might imagine.

Foundation selection Guide

#1:  SPEND THE BULK OF YOUR BEAUTY BUDGET ON YOUR FOUNDATION!!!

DO YOU UNDERSTAND THE WORDS THAT ARE COMING FROM MY COMPUTER?  Refrain from purchasing drugstore foundation.  Why?  Good question.  Firstly,  you cannot test the color and formulation in the drugstore.  Secondly, the level of pigment in drugstore foundations (more water less color) are not on par with higher end brands.  Thirdly, some drugstore cosmetics manufactures do not list their ingredients on the bottles/compacts.  This can be problematic if you have skin sensitivities.  The saying,  “you get what you pay for” applies in this case.

#2:  GO TO A LOCATION WHERE SAMPLES ARE GIVEN!!!

Your best friend in this category is Sephora!  They do not carry all high-end brands, but the friendly service and patience their employees exude, is priceless!   They will spend as much time as you deem necessary on making samples for you to take home.  Sephora will happily accommodate any of your requests, without the added pressure to make additional purchases.  Department stores sales associates are a bit more ambiguous and are limited to the counter brand they are working for at that moment.  Their goal is to make a sale; they will try to persuaded you to purchase something else.  STAND YOUR GROUND….be gracious, get your sample and leave!

#3:  BUY THE HIGHEST COVERAGE AND/OR LONGEST LASTING FORMULA!!!!

You have read correctly!!  These types of foundations are very versatile.  What is the point to a tinted moisturizer when you can make one yourself?   How you ask?  Take your high coverage,  long-lasting foundation and/or a bronzing liquid (Dr.  Hauschka Translucent Bronze Concentrate) and mix it with your favorite moisturizer.  On really bad skin days, high coverage formulas can be sheered down next to nothing on the skin, yet still give wonderful coverage.  The secret is to use a slightly damp sponge (Beauty Blender) or a slightly damp brush (philosophy airbrush brush) and use stippling and swirling motions.  The results are amazing.  As an added bonus,  you will only utilize a small amount due to the high pigment and viscosity!  Who wouldn’t want that?

Very high coverage long-lasting formulas:                  Estee Lauder Maximum Coverage #03 creamy vanilla, old packaging
Koh Gen Do #123,
Estee Lauder Double Wear #3N1 (summer shade)

Estee Lauder MC #03 and KGD #123.  EL gives KGD  better longevity.  This will cover my whole face!

#4:  MATCH YOUR FACE TO YOUR NECK!!!!

Our necks are naturally shielded from the sun by our heads.  The majority of women have lighter necks/darker faces.   The opposite can occur if you are a sunscreen devotee; which will result in a darker neck/lighter face scenario.   Regardless, do not try to cover your neck with a darker/lighter foundation, on the contrary, cover your face with the same shade as your neck!!  The results will be more natural and you will have a more uniformed look.  Test your respective foundation by swatching it on the side your neck (bringing it up slightly onto the jaw); not your cheek, backs of your hands, fingers, or arms.  Sometimes you need to mix two colors to achieve your ideal shade or consistency.  Once you’ve mastered your neck coloring you can victoriously declare a winner!!

Koh Gen Do Moisture Foundation #123
Estee Lauder Double Wear 3N1 (old formula).

#5:  DO NOT BELIEVE CERTAIN FORMULAS CAN DO IT ALL!!!

If the long-lasting feature conjures up images of cracking skin, then by all means stick to cream formulas which have higher coverage and are moisturizing (Eve Pearl).  BB creams, CC creams, DD creams EE creams…any alphabet cream, are just creams with foundation mixed into them.  They claim to have all the benefits of your sunscreen, moisturizer, foundation, primer, etc…all rolled up into one product.   You can go that route, however, these will not give you much coverage and color matching is challenging.  Most likely you will still need an additional layer of foundation.

THE VERDICT:  If makeup could talk what would it say?

Makeup would tell you, work on perfecting your canvas and the rest will follow!!!

The wrong formulation and shade can have adverse effects, in the form of break-outs and what I like to call,  bobble head syndrome (line of demarcation separating the jaw and neck line).  So 1983!!!   Use these suggestions as a guide to selecting your foundation.  When you find the right formula you will proclaim you have found your equivalent to Romeo and rejoice, “Did my heart love till now? forswear it, sight! For I ne’er saw true beauty till this night.”  Oh Shakespeare you romantic fiend, you do have a way with words!!   Adieu my lovelies!   Be well and stay safe.
