Estee Lauder 04 Crystal Baby Pure Color Illuminating Powder Gelee Blush review and comparisons.

Estee Lauder 04 Crystal Baby Illuminating Powder Gelee Blush.

Estee Lauder 04 Crystal Baby Pure Color Illuminating Powder Gelee Blush.

While at the Estee Lauder counter minding my own business (by business I mean, scouting out other Pure Color Envy lipsticks) I discovered Estee Lauder 04 Crystal Baby Pure Color Illuminating Powder Gelee Blush ($40 USD/ 6g) part of the Summer 2014 Crystal Baby Collection, an Asia Exclusive.  This collection centered around the theme of fresh clean makeup, it consists of:

  • Four lipsticks ($26 USD):  Crystal Baby (permanent color), Crystal Blush, Crystal Doll and Crystal Innocence.
  • One lipgloss ($24 USD):  Crystal Baby.
  • One Illuminating Powder Gelee Blush ($40 USD):  Crystal Baby Pure Color Illuminating Powder Gelee Blush.
  • One Nail Polish ($21 USD):  You guessed it….Crystal Baby.

The Pros to 04 Crystal Baby Pure Color Illuminating Powder Gelee Blush:

  1. Absolutely beautiful opalescent pink illuminator.
  2. Sheer base color keeps Crystal Baby from looking dull on the skin.
  3. Texture is incredible smooth and lightweight.
  4. Can be used dry or wet.
  5. When used with a dense dampened brush, the powder transforms into a cream/gel-like consistency that easily glides on the skin, leaving behind a radiant finish.
  6. Lasts well throughout the day with slight fading by the eighth hour when used dry.
  7. Can be mixed lightly with your blush to create the “glow-from-within” look.
  8. Sturdy packaging comes with a large mirror and sponge applicator, which works quite well with this product.
  9. Makes an amazing inner corner highlighter.
  10. Does not settle into pores and fine lines if used in moderation.
  11. Can be used as an eyeshadow mixed with other cream/gel eyeshadows.
  12. Product does not harden in the pan when wet.
  13. Smoother texture and more wearable than my Modern Mercury Gelee and comes with more product.
  14. Formulated without parabens or mineral oil.

The Cons to 04 Crystal Baby Pure Color Illuminating Powder Gelee Blush:

  1. Nordstrom is the only in-store and online retailer.
  2. This collection was hidden behind the counter, not easily visible to the public.
  3. Asia exclusive?  WTH (what the heck) This has to be one of the best collections Estee Lauder has created for the summer…heck 04 Crystal Baby Gelee should be made permanent.
  4. Can look too shimmery if applied with a heavy hand or used solely as a blush.
  5. No other cons…I love the formula of Estee Lauder Powder Gelees  🙂

Estee Lauder 04 Crystal Baby Pure Color IIluminationg Powder Gelee Blush is an amazing highlighter.  I used my dampened Tom Ford Cream Foundation Brush (reviewed here) to apply 04 Crystal Baby above the cheekbones.  Estee Lauder Pure Color Envy Lipstick in 210 Impulsive (reviewed here) makes for the perfect lip color to wear with 04 Crystal Baby Gelee.

As the name would suggest, 04 Crystal Baby Gelee Blush can be used as a blush when mixed with regular blushes.  For the above photo, I dipped my Tom Ford Cheek Brush twice in Giorgio Armani Sheer Blush 10 Beige and once in Crystal Baby.  This pairing is ideal, because Crystal Baby was able to boost the luminosity that was inherent in GA 10 Beige.

Another wonderful use for this limited-edition Gelee, is to use it as an eyeshadow.  Personally, I loved the effect when paired with a warm golden base, such as, YSL 07 Gold Star Creme Liner.  I simply applied 07 Gold Star all over the mobile lid and added Crystal Baby on top.  This combo did not budge for 10 hours, even my arm swatch seemed to be “glued” onto my skin.

  • MAC Play-It-Proper and Thebalm Mary-lou Manizer are formulated with a white base color that can turn a bit ashy on certain skin tones.
  • Estee Lauder Modern Mercury Gelee was one of those products I had to have, because it was the first of its kind.  I barely wore the darn thing, because it was too shimmery, too dark and just too much.
  • Laura Mercier Highlight 01 is a wonderful peachy/pink highlighter (reviewed here).
  • Laura Mercier Spellbound is similar in consistency to Crystal Baby.  Although, I feel Crystal Baby has a smoother texture and the sheer iridescent pink tone is beyond flattering on variety of skin tones (review here).
  • RMS Beauty Living Luminizer is wonderful highlighter for the cooler seasons (reviewed here).

THE VERDICT:  If makeup could talk what would it say?

Makeup would tell you Estee Lauder 04 Crystal Baby Pure Color Illuminating Powder Gelee Blush is one of the most beautiful color and formulation of highlighters to date.  The overall effect is radiant and sophisticated.  The burning question…Do you need this beauty in your life?  Do BBQ and Fourth of July go-hand-in-hand?  Do birds fly?  Are children and sugar synonymous?   Yes, yes, yes and yes.  Run don’t walk to get this beauty…before it’s gone.  Up next, Vincent Longo Blush review…I blame that wonderful purchase on Olivia from The Unknown Beauty Blog.  Be well, stay safe and be happy.

MAC Radiant Rose Prep+Prime Highlighter review and photos.

MAC Radiant Rose Prep+Prime Highlighter.

MAC Radiant Rose Prep+Prime Highlighter.

Often times when I look in the mirror, the reflection that stares back appears very tired and drained.  Lack of sleep is usually the culprit, however simply getting more sleep just seems, I don’t know, too easy.  Why waste precious time sleeping when I could go to the store and buy MAC Radiant Rose Prep+Prime Highlighter ($25 US) and fake a more relaxed, awakened and refreshed look.  See most problems can be solved at the MAC counter 🙂

MAC Radiant Rose Prep+Prime Highlighter.

The Pros:

  1. Seemingly matte pink brightening formula.  Super fine micro-shimmers are undetectable in natural lighting.
  2. Radiant rose in particular is suitable for light to medium skin tones.
  3. Lightweight consistency is very pigmented.
  4. Applies smoothly and blends out seamlessly.
  5. Amazing lasting power (10 hours +).
  6. Convenient click pen applicator dispenses the right amount every time..no wasted product (looking at you Ellis Faas).
  7. Very little product is needed.
  8. Covers amazingly well, in some cases concealer is not needed.
  9. Can be used under the eyes, on the cheekbones, under the brow bone, etc..
  10. Gives a soft focused effect where product is placed.
  11. Blending can be achieved with fingers or a synthetic brush.
  12. Photographs beautifully if applied in moderation.
  13. Offered in 4 colors to suit the palest to the darkest skinned beauties.
  14. Formulated without parabens.
  15. Permanent and easily obtainable at any MAC counter.

The Cons:

  1. The black packaging makes it very difficult to tell when the product requires replacement.
  2. Product dries fairly quickly once on the skin, diligent bending must be done after each application.
  3. Can be too drying for people with excessively dry skin (try before you buy..get a sample).
  4. Can crease, look caky, and flash-back in photos if a heavy hand is used during application (hint: silica is an ingredient, hence the radiant claim).
  5. An overzealous clicker (we’ve all done it) will result in excess product discharge.

On me, Radiant Rose’s pinky hue works as a corrector and concealer all in one.  As a highlighter it performs equally as well.  When placed under the eye and brow bone, the brightening effect lasts all day and the emollient-free formula does not cause mascara to smudge or flake off.

Application:

Application of this little wonder is fairly easy and straight forward.  Twist the base of the pen and product is dispensed through the brush.  Place the highlighter in the intended area, a section at a time; the product dries quickly once placed on the skin.  The brush on the pen is brilliant for product placement in hard to reach areas of the face, such as, the corners under the eye, in the  hollow of the eye socket next to the nose, the brow bone and the center of the face.

Use a clean ring finger or synthetic brush to blend out the product.  As a final step, I also like to go over each RR area with my foundation brush, (which still has some foundation embedded in the bristles) to ensure a seamless finish.  Voila…you are now radiant!

THE VERDICT:  If makeup could talk what would it say?

Makeup would tell you if you are a woman who has kids, has a hectic job, works long hours, are running around all day, are lacking sleep, a student, a butcher, a baker, a candlestick maker, then MAC Radiant Rose Prep+Prime Highlighter (or any of the other colors) is for you.  As you can tell I’m not into heavy concealers, but a good brightener will always have a place in my heart…I mean my under eyes 🙂  Next up, MAC Huggable Lipcolour in Red Necessity….Yeah, I’ve been loving MAC lately.  Be well and stay safe.

RMS Beauty Living Luminizer is Illuminating!

RMS Beauty Living Luminizer.

RMS Beauty Living Luminizer.

When was the last time you could say all the ingredients in your cosmetics were natural and organic?  In my experience, the words organic and makeup do not go hand-in-hand.  That is precisely why Rose-Marie Swift created RMS Beauty; her line of all organic cosmetics.  My favorite product from the line is the RMS Beauty Living Luminizer ($38 US/ 4.25g).  This highlighter/illuminator allows the skin to instantly look healthy and luminous without any artificial sparkle or shimmer.  Best of all, because of the all natural organic composition, RMS Beauty Living Luminizer can be used on the lips as well.  What an illuminating idea!

According to Dermstore:

New York based makeup artist Rose-Marie Swift has been a prominent authority in the beauty industry for over 20 years. After experiencing serious health problems years ago, she learned that working in the cosmetic industry caused her body to absorb toxic levels of heavy metals, including aluminum, lead, mercury, pesticides and other harsh chemicals. After stabilizing her health, Rose-Marie created RMS Beauty, a completely organic cosmetic line that offers a wide range of elegantly colored cosmetics that pamper the skin with pure, natural ingredients.

This organic makeup line is quite popular with celebrities such as Mirandra Kerr, Giselle Bundchen, and Taylor Swift.

Living Luminizer can be used anywhere you desire; on the bridge of the nose, on the cheekbones, as an inner corner highlight, and on the cupid’s bow.  You can also apply it on your collarbone when wearing a strapless dress..the possibilities are endless.  The consistency of the product varies due to the change in temperature.  Since Living Luminizer (LL) is composed of natural substances (coconut oil, castor oil and beeswax) predictably the product becomes very firm in cooler months and quite malleable in warmer months. Currently, LL is very firm and needs the presence of fingers to properly warm-up and apply the product to the face.  The company recommends to store LL in a cool place during the warmer months.

Casual Evening look using RMS Beauty Living Luminizer.

Casual Evening look using RMS Beauty Living Luminizer.

RMS Beauty Living Luminizer is a subtle highlighter.  The natural ingredients allow the product to meld into the skin rather than sit on top of the skin.  The “lit from within” glow is easily achieved with this illuminator. The packaging is clean and simple, LL is housed in a glass pot with a metal top.  LL does not have an expiration date, the 5 ingredients used (no water) do not require the addition of any artificial preservatives, so rest assured your product will last for a while. ♥  Ingredients are as follows:

*Ricinus Communis (Castor) Seed Oil, *Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil, *Cera Alba (Beeswax), *Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Extract, and may contain [+/- Titanium Dioxide CI77891, Mica CI 77019]
* CERTIFIED ORGANIC

As expected, LL is very emollient and a saving grace for drier skins, especially during the winter season. Oiler skins may find this product counterproductive, and seek out a longer-lasting formula.  The absence of chemicals does not allow this solidified mass to completely dry-down on the face.  If you accidentally touch your face during the day, Living Luminizer will rub off…so do not touch 🙂

On me, Living Luminizer lasted six hours before I experienced any fading.  What was left was still a subtle sheen that gave me a noticeably fresh look.  My husband prefers this illuminator, he said, “I see a nice glow but no shimmer.  It looks so natural.”  Apparently, men do not like shimmer….WHAT!!  That’s Crazy Talk…

RMS Beauty Living Luminizer

RMS Beauty Living Luminizer

Surprisingly, my foundation did not break-down throughout the day in the areas where LL was placed. Application consists of swirling my ring finger in the pot and using tapping motions to place the luminizer on the target areas.  Easy, peasy, lemon squeezy (I’ve been around children too long).

THE VERDICT:  If makeup could talk what would it say?

Makeup would highly recommend RMS Beauty Living Luminizer.  This all natural organic illuminator may be costly, but rest assured, it will endure when all other chemical based makeup needs to be discarded. Living Luminzer would be ideal for people who do not want to wear a lot of makeup and seek only to appear fresh-faced and glowing.  RMS Beauty would also be an excellent choice for young girls who are just starting out in makeup; their look would be fresh, clean, polished and more importantly, all natural.  Who wouldn’t love that?  Be well and stay safe.

Laura Mercier Spellbound Illuminator review, swatches and comparisons.

Laura Mercier Spellbound Highlighter.

Laura Mercier Spellbound Highlighter.

The most acquired items in my makeup collection are highlighters.  I have an ongoing obsession with these gleaming, glowing, silky beauties.  Being that I have a dry skin, a highlighter is a must in my daily routine. Highlighters/Illuminators single-handedly restore the life and glow back into my skin, which has been unkindly stripped away by foundation and time 🙂  So when Laura Mercier Spellbound Illuminator  ($42 US/10g) from the new Dark Spell Collection came-a-calling, I answered with a resounding, “YES PLEASE!”   *click on each photo to enlarge*

The Pros/Formula:

Spellbound has a wonderful hybrid formula and aesthetically speaking, it is an amazing piece of cosmetic to behold.  The term hybrid would imply a mixture of two textures, presumably gel and powder.  The color of Spellbound is a soft rose gold, not too light, shimmery or dark, it would certainly suit a variety of makeup looks and skin tones.  Laura Mercier describes Spellbound as,

A beautiful face illuminating hybrid product with a soft rose gold shimmer perfect for highlighting. The unique formula based on high pearl levels provides buildable long-wearing colour.

The hybrid consistency is very reminiscent of the limited-edition Rose Rendezvous (RR) Illuminator Laura Mercier introduced last year.   RR had an unmistakable rose/pink hue (similar to Estee Lauder Modern Mercury highlighter), which did not appeal to me in the least.  Spellbound on the other hand has a slight pink undertone dominated by a peach/gold base color; I adore this shade.  Spellbound is pigmented and long-lasting with a definite sheen apparent in the targeted areas.  My Laura Mercier Highlight 01 (reviewed here) remains my favorite illuminator, however when mixed with Spellbound, it takes on a denser persona. When combined, Spellbound was able to warm up Highlight 01 so that the latter did not look so stark on my tanned summer complexion.

Laura Mercier Spellbound Illuminator w/Highlight 01 on the cheek bones.

Laura Mercier Spellbound Illuminator w/Highlight 01 on the cheek bones.

The Cons:

I did find the texture to be slightly gritty compared to Highlight 01.  Of course the average “jane” would think me ludicrous, but the makeup connoisseur within, can sense the discrepancy in the quality.  My other complaint is the “limited-edition” tag that has been slapped on this product.  Due to the general appeal, LM should consider making Spellbound (and Ritual) a permanent item in their lineup.

The closest Highlighter/Illuminator in color to LM Spellbound would be Dior Amber Diamond.  Keep in mind, any one of these offerings will look slightly different depending on your natural coloring.  There are some highlighters in my collection I no longer use due to the fragrance and/or paraben factor.  If these features do not concern you, all the highlighters shown are fabulous.  I apply Spellbound with my Tom Ford Cream Foundation Brush, but frankly any small head brush will suffice.  The lasting power is phenomenal especially if used with a slightly dampened brush.

THE VERDICT:  If makeup could talk what would it say?

Makeup would tell you Laura Mercier Spellbound is a beautiful, gleaming, soft, and sexy Illuminator. Nothing compliments your face like a good quality highlighter and this does the job spectacularly.  As always, it is best to start off lightly and build up to your desired intensity.  Due take note Spellbound is limited-edition, therefore do not hesitate, because as we all know Laura giveth and she also taketh away.   Be well and stay safe.

Highlight 01:

Laura Mercier Matte Radiance Baked Powder in Highlight 01 ($36US/7.50g) is the only highlighter offered as part of the New Matte Radiance Baked Bronzer Collection.  This product is fabulous!  Highlight 01 is smooth, non glittery, can be used wet or dry, and lasts all day!!  It gives the skin a refined luminous glow.  The beautiful peach/pink hue combination is perfect for both warm and cool skin tones.  This powder is also fragrance free and paraban-free.  One would use this product in all the usual places; top of cheek bones, inner corner highlight, top of cupid’s bow, down the bridge of the nose, etc..  Laura Mercier Highlight 01 also works very nicely on top of a cream highlighter.  It does not cake or get patchy, quite the opposite, it maintains a radiant glow all day long.  I pair Highlight 01 with my trusty Laura Mercier Baked Bronzer in Ritual; they are my dynamic duo!

Makeup would say it is very pleased with the new addition to our highlighter family.  Laura Mercier Matte Radiance Baked Powder in Highlight 01 is a subtle highlighter that will please the ultimate highlighter fanatic.  Highlight 01 is not too showy or glittery, it gives off a radiant youthful glow!  Will people mistake you for being 20 years younger?  Maybe.  Remember you are as young as you feel….and I feel 18……Giddy up!  Be well and stay safe.
