NYX Proof-It Waterproof Eye Shadow Primer was Love at First Swipe!

NYX Proof-It

NYX Proof-It Waterproof Eye Shadow Primer.

Lately, I have been on a mission to find more affordable products that perform similarly to the big name brands.  Admittedly, I do not have the greatest luck with drugstore cosmetics, in my experience they do not perform as well as higher-end brands.  However, when a spanking new 10 foot NYX Cosmetics display was unveiled at my local Bed, Bath and Beyond, my attention was immediately drawn to the NYX Proof-It Waterproof Eye Shadow Primer ($6.99 USD/7ml).  This affordable little marvel has managed to kick my high-end primer to the curb. 🙂

The Pros to NYX Proof-It Waterproof Eye Shadow Primer:

  1. Small amount needed to create a smooth, clear waterproof canvas.
  2. Eyeshadows bond instantly to the primer.
  3. Eyeshadow colors are more vibrant without any fading throughout the day.
  4. Drier texture is ideal for oiler lids and hot/humid weather conditions.
  5. Skin does not feel dry or tight.
  6. Truly waterproof–eyeshadows remain intact even under extreme dampened conditions (see below).
  7. Removes easily at night with any eye makeup remover.
  8. Small container is compact and can be stored anywhere.
  9. Amount/price ratio is unbeatable for the quality.
  10. Outer packaging is well thought out with clearly displayed directions.
  11. Available from various online and local retailers.
  12. Formulated without parabens, mineral oil or fragrance.
  13. Made in Taiwan.

The Cons to NYX Proof-It Waterproof Eye Shadow Primer:

  1. Feels tacky and heavy if too much product is applied to the skin–less is more people!
  2. Eyeshadows can appear patchy and creasing will occur if the primer is not given sufficient time to dry.
  3. Due to the drier texture, matte eyeshadows are prone to “drag” if one is heavy-handed with their  application.
NYX Proof-It

NYX Proof-It Waterproof Eye Shadow Primer applied to a clean lid.

  • Dispensing the right amount of product is crucial with this primer.  I prefer to utilize only the amount that comes out on the applicator head for each eye.  Using my ring finger, I spread the product out in a thin layer across the entire eye area and under the lash line.  IMHO, the end results are compromised if too much product is applied–this is a case of less is best.
  • Another important point is to let the primer dry/set on the skin before eyeshadow application.  Again, this is were the bad reviews come into play; the directions clearly state to let the product “dry for a bit”.  Despite this ambiguous term, I found 1-2 minutes is more than sufficient for the primer to set.  If you do not possesses the patience for this step, then this primer is not for you.
NYX Proof-It

NYX Proof-It Waterproof Eye Shadow Primer used with all matte shadows.

  • Matte shadows are notoriously difficult to blend-out when paired with drier eyeshadow primers. To combat this issue, simply apply a flesh colored eyeshadow across the lid after the primer has set–this method significantly reduces eyeshadow drag.  However, a light hand paired with a soft brush usually results in the smoothest outcome.
  • For this look, Giorgio Armani Eyes to Kill Solo Vulcano was applied thickly along the lash line and blended upward.  MUFE M-510 was applied on the rest of the mobile lid and brow bone with MAC Uninterrupted in the crease.  The look lasted a full 12 hours in perfect condition.
NYX Proof-It with Kjaer Weis eyeshadows

NYX Proof-It Waterproof Eye Shadow Primer used with Kjaer Weis Magnetic and Divine natural/ organic formulated eyeshadows.

  • If you are one to favor natural/organic eyeshadow brands, NYX Proof-It works beautifully with these formulas as well.  For the above photo, Kjaer Weis Magnetic Eyeshadow was applied to the mobile lid and crease with Kjear Weis Divine Eyeshadow on the outer corner.  The underlying golden pearl in Magnetic became evident over Proof-It–gorgeous!!  This look stayed true for 10 hours (longer if I hadn’t remove it).
Colourpop So Quiche

NYX Proof-It Waterproof Eye Shadow Primer used with ColourPop So Quiche shimmery eyeshadow.

  • If you are one to favor metallic/shimmery shadows, NYX Proof-It also worked beautifully with ColourPop’s So Quiche Eyeshadow (review coming soon).  The insanely abundant pink shimmer in this shadow was out in full force (sadly my camera was unable to capture the pink shimmer).  This look stayed true for a full 10 hours (longer if I hadn’t removed it).  BTW, MAC Uninterrupted in the crease area never looked so good.  🙂
NYX

eyeshadow look.

  • Should you favor a minimal look, NYX Proof-It worked beautifully to create a smooth canvas for my Guerlain Powder Foundation on the mobile lid with MAC Uninterrupted mixed with Sweet As Cocoa in the crease.

  • A variety of eyeshadow textures and brands ranging from inexpensive to high-end, held up remarkably well over NYX Proof-It.  In the above photos, all the eyeshadows were subjected to warm running water for 5 minutes; notice how vibrant and undisturbed all the colors remained. I believe the waterproof claim is totally justified!!
  1. Burberry Pale Barley ($29 USD): Rich satin golden taupe
  2. ColourPop So Quiche ($5 USD): Metallic taupe with pink shimmer
  3. Giorgio Armani Vulcano ($32 USD): Rich matte aubergine
  4. Kjaer Weis Magnetic ($27 USD refill): Natural/Organic brown with light golden pearl
  5. Prestige Wicked ($8.50 USD):  Warm Brown with gold pearl

THE VERDICT:  If makeup could talk what would it say?

Makeup would tell you NYX Proof-It Waterproof Eye Shadow Primer has officially replaced my Nars Primer–$7 as opposed to $25–need I say more?  Until next time, be well, stay safe and be happy.

Things I Have Been Loving: Volume 3.

Things I Have Been Loving:

Things I Have Been Loving.

I don’t know about anyone else, but the ridiculously cold weather has transformed my outdoorsy nature, and reduced it to hermit status.  I have absolutely no desire to brave the cold temperatures; unnecessary stops (aka: department store detours) have been temporarily ceased.  As a result, instead of impulsively buying more makeup, I have decided to “shop my stash” and pair some of my newest acquisitions with some old reliable(s).  I hope you enjoy this edition of Things I Have Been Loving.

Things I Have Been Loving: Kjaer Weis Magnetic

Things I Have Been Loving:
Kjaer Weis Magnetic topped with Giorgio Armani Eye and Brow 9 Gold.

 Kjaer Weis Divine Eyeshadow

Things I Have Been Loving:
Kjaer Weis Divine Eyeshadow topped with Giorgio Armani Eye and Brow 9 Gold.

  • Kjaer Weis Magnetic and Divine Eyeshadows have become a bit of an obsession.  Rather than ignoring my other silicone lovelies, I decided pairing them would be the most logical solution.
  • Giorgio Armani Eye and Brow 9 Gold applies beautifully on top of Magnetic and Divine eyeshadows, giving the normally conservative duo a bit of pizzaz.
  • Guerlain 02 Bleu Outremer has also been used faithfully since its purchase.  The deep navy liner adds an elegant touch to all my looks and the hassle-free removal at night makes this gem even more alluring.
  • Billy B #12 Brush works beautifully with KW shadows to apply my outer “v” color with blended precision.
  • Trish McEvoy #29 Tapered Brush has been in my collection for years.  This brush is not the softest around, but the perfectly tapered head is ideal for applying and smoking out just the right amount of color to my lower lash line, using minimal effort.
Kjaer Weis Radiance Highlighter .

Things I Have Been Loving:
Kjaer Weis Radiance Highlighter used as an eyeshadow with MAC Uninterrupted on the lower lash line.

  • Kjaer Weis Radiance Highlighter has been used as a cheek highlighter, an inner corner highlighter and an illuminating stand alone eyeshadow. The 95% organic ingredients and fantastic wear has morphed me into a KW groupie 🙂
  • MAC Uninterrupted has been in my collection for three years.  This warm sepia color looks amazing when worn on the lower lash line, as a stand alone color on the mobile lid, and in the crease.  Frankly, this is one eyeshadow that can do it all and look amazing against any eye color.
  • Waxelene is a wonderful all natural/organic petroleum jelly alternative.  This wonderful product was brought to my attention by, Olivia from The Unknown Beauty Blog (here).  Her honest and detail reviews are always filled with the most helpful tips.  For instance, did you know you can use Waxelene to help press pigments?  No?  Well, Olivia has shown us the light (here).  Personally, this jar was purchased with the intent to relieve dry skin on my legs.  Not only does it work beautifully on the entire body, but I have also used this emollient wonder as a facial moisturizer (in moderation). This product is very similar to Egyptian Magic, without the overly hard texture and inflated price.
  • MAC Cosmetics Pro Palette Single is sturdy and reasonably priced.  At $8 USD, this customizable palette houses my powder foundation, eyeshadows and powder highlighter–a steal considering the competitor’s product is almost 3x as much and made from cardboard.
Essie Topless and Barefoot brush

Things I Have Been Loving:
Essie Topless and Barefoot brush switched for a Wet N Wild Megalast brush.

Essie Topless and Barefoot

Essie Topless and Barefoot with WnW top (taken in natural light).

Essie Topless and Barefoot

Essie Topless and Barefoot with WnW top (taken with flash).

  • Essie Topless and Barefoot has been used approximately twice in the past two years.  The thin brush and thick formula never really worked well together to give an even application on my wide nail beds. However, since I decided to change the brush head for a wider more substantial brush, like the one found on Wet n Wild Megalast polishes, application is fast and easy.  This opaque color levels out beautifully by the second coat, giving professional looking results.  Even though Topless and Barefoot chips within two days, I love the clean refined look this shade gives the hands.  Removal is a breeze (as with all light polishes) and a fresh manicure can be achieved in no time–thanks to the thicker brush.
Things I Have Been Loving

Things I Have Been Loving in Action.

Shiseido and Girlactik

Things I Have Been Loving:
Girlactik Demure Matte Lip Paint topped with Shiseido RD203 Lacquer Rouge.

  • YSL 11 Prune Impertinente Baby Doll Kiss and Blush light mousse-like texture gives the most realistic flush to the cheeks.  Should you require a long-lasting “cream” blush, then look no further than this product.
  • Girlactik Demure Matte Lip Paint is just as important in my collection as her equally beguiling sister, Allure.  Both colors have freed me from ever having to wear lipliner.  Demure looks amazing on her own and especially paired with RD203.
  • Shiseido Lacquer Rouge RD203 is my perfect “nude” lip shade.  This particular tube has been in my collection for three years and it’s still going strong.  When paired with Demure, the results are flattering against my olive complexion.  Both RD203 and RD702 (mid-tone red-brown) bond with Demure and last well over the five-hour mark, all the while, remaining glossy and hydrating on the lips. Why I ever turn my back on these, I will never know.

THE VERDICT:  If makeup could talk what would it say?

Makeup would tell you some of these products have proven themselves to be rather dependable in my life. When paired with some newbies, the results are even better.  In the meanwhile, I’m off to photograph and test some new Kjaer Weis blushes that were generously gifted to me by my husband.  Will they perform as well as YSL #11?  Stay tuned.  Until next time, be well, stay safe, be happy and warm 🙂

Here Comes the Sun with Kjaer Weis Radiance Highlighter.

Kjaer Weis Radiance Highlighter.

Kjaer Weis Radiance Highlighter.

Lately, there are very few things I deem worthy of purchasing.  My reviews have diminished not due to lack of interest in makeup, but simply because I have had moments of, “been-there-done-that” pertaining to many of the new mainstream collections.  However, such is not the case with Kjaer Weis Radiance Highlighter ($56 USD/3.5g for compact and highlighter/ $32 for refill).  This brand has synergistically hit all the right notes in my book. The natural/organic ingredients, superb packaging, amazing formula and wear just does not get any better 🙂

Kjaer Weis Radiance Highlighter Packaging:

  • As with all Kjaer Weis products, the presentation is truly outstanding.  The hefty metal compact is enclosed in a thick cardboard box, made to resemble faux leather.
  • Sleek magnetic compact swivels open full circle.
  • High polish chrome finish can be used as a mirror for touch-ups during the day.
  • Compact can also house KW blush refills.  All KW products can be purchased in refillable pan form to save on the expense of the compact ($23).
  • When compared to its eyeshadow comrade, Radiance Highlighter Compact is more substantial and makes an impressive statement.  I’m beyond thrilled with the purchase of this compact.

Kjaer Weis Radiance Highlighter Formula:

  • The feather light texture and drier consistency makes this suitable for all skin types.  If RMS Living Luminizer was too emollient for your tastes, this could very well be the perfect natural remedy.
  • Formulated without Coconut Oil.
  • Made in Italy with 95% of the ingredients organically grown.
  • The slight lavender undertones exudes a subtle warmth that combines beautifully with the silver pearl (mica); a pairing that is rather flattering against my olive complexion.
  • Due to the soft cream base and abundance of mica particles, minimal product is needed to achieve desired results.
  • For some reason, Radiance looks particularly striking when paired with cream blush formulas.
  • Lasts amazingly well on my dry skin, with minor fading by the end of a 12 hour day (this may vary on oiler skins).  Despite its impressive longevity, Radiance does not fully set, therefore, resist the urge to touch your face.
  • Lasts 10 hours (over a primer) when applied as an eyeshadow, without creasing or color transfer to the orbital bone area.
  • If applied heavily, the substantial pearl in the formula builds up quickly and can appear too stark against medium/darker skins–less is best.

Application of Kjaer Weis Radiance Highlighter:

  • My preferred method of application is achieved by swirling my ring finger in the pan and lightly tapping Radiance on the skin.
  • Radiance blends easily on bare skin and over powder foundation.
  • When applied as an eyeshadow, fingers work best using light tapping motions. A small synthetic brush (Billy B #12) was used to place Radiance on the inner corner of the eyes.
  • Radiance does not settle into pores or fine lines. However, as with all highlighting products, a light touch is highly recommended to avoid looking overdone.

Cream Highlighter Comparison:

Kjaer Weis

Cream Highlighter Comparisons without flash.

Cream Highlighter Comparisons

Cream Highlighter Comparisons with flash.

  • RMS Beauty Living Luminizer is sheer and paler in color than KW Radiance.  The organic coconut oil based formula solidifies during the cooler months.  On my dry skin, this is lovely, however, the emollient nature has been known to look too greasy on oiler skins.  In addition, some people are allergic to Coconut Oil.
  • Kjaer Weis Radiance Highlighter has a balance of cool and warm properties.  This organic formula stays true to its creamy composition in any season and the longevity is remarkable.
  • Vincent Longo Mermaid Muse is a fabulous highlighter and obviously warmer than all the others.  This chemically based formula does not budge once it has set.
  • Edward Bess Sunlight is more golden than KW Radiance.  This is a wonderful highlighter as well, but the packaging and price/amount ratio pales in comparison to KW.

THE VERDICT:  If makeup could talk what would it say?

Makeup would state the obvious–Kjaer Weis Radiance Highlighter is one of the best products I have come across.  The versatility of this organic gem is unsurpassed.  Do I recommend this investment? Wholeheartedly, indubitably, undoubtably, irrefutably…YES!!  Until next time, be well, stay safe and be happy.

Kjaer Weis Divine and Magnetic Eyeshadows review and swatches.

Kjaer Weis Divine and Magnetic

Kjaer Weis Divine and Magnetic Eyeshadows.

Personally, natural cosmetics are the Crudités at a dinner party; you know they are good for you, but the presentation (packaging) and the taste (performance) leaves something to be desired.  There is no denying the rise in demand for more naturally based beauty products; however, the majority of those cosmetics are underwhelming to say the least–that is until, Kjaer Weis Divine and Magnetic Eyeshadows ($45 USD for compact and shadow/ 1.2g) came into my life.  These two little darlings not only changed the way I perceived natural cosmetics, but their performance and outstanding presentation could easily rival their chemically derived competitors.  According to KW website:

Kjær Weis is a visionary and forward thinking cosmetics line created by Danish-born, New York-based makeup artist Kirsten Kjær Weis. It’s a brand that recognizes health and beauty equally.

“Ultimately what I wanted to achieve was an alternative that fused beautiful color, texture and design with organic non-harmful formulas. I think it’s the way forward.”

Kjaer Weis

Kjaer Weis Magnetic and Divine Eyeshadow swatches.

The Pros to Kjaer Weis Divine and Magnetic Eyeshadows:

  1. Divine is a gorgeous deep gray that applies sheerly, but easily builds up to the deepest hue (as seen in the swatches).
  2. Magnetic is a golden brown color which is quite pigmented from the get-go.  It makes an amazing all over lid color and melds beautifully in the crease for added depth and dimension.
  3. Soft satin finish is quite flattering on all skins.
  4. Smooth texture applies like butter and instantly binds to the skin.
  5. No color fallout–YAY!
  6. When worn over a primer (Nars), both colors lasted 12 hours without any fading.
  7. All KW products can be purchased in refillable form to be placed in a palette of one’s choosing.
  8. Their “refillable system” is a cost-effective way to save on the overall expense and unnecessary packaging.
  9. Extraordinary hefty metal magnetic compact swivels open (full circle).  The white KW enameled logo is unique amongst any brand.
  10. NO artificial ingredients, such as petroleum, parabens, artificial coloring and fragrance, petrochemical emulsifiers.
  11. “A minimum 70% of the [ingredients] comes from organic farming.”
  12. Some of the ingredients include:  “Bamboo: Rich in natural silicone, extremely important in the synthesis of collagen in the connective tissue.
Honeysuckle Extract: Antibacterial, nature’s own preservative.
    Gardenia Florida Extract: Antioxidant.”
  13. NOT tested on animals.
  14. Made in Italy.

The Cons to Kjaer Weis Divine and Magnetic Eyeshadows:

  1. Despite the amazing packaging, the single compact format is not the most practical for travel–I would have preferred a quad compact offering instead.
  2. Compact is a fingerprint magnet.  For the price, a soft cleaning cloth/pouch could have been included.
  3. Due to the soft nature of the formula, powder kick-up is inevitable.  Do not press your brush too firmly in the pan.
  4. Not readily available in many retail locations.
  5. Refill costs $25-27 and compact is sold separately for $18.  I purchased one compact pre-filled with Divine and one refillable pan with Magnetic.  For everyday use, both colors are stored in my MAC palette.
Kjaer Weis Magnetic

Kjaer Weis Magnetic Eyeshadow compact.

Ms. Weis hired famed creative designer extraordinaire Marc Atlan (read more here), to conceptualize the brand’s distinctive metal packaging and branding.  Mr. Atlan’s clients include: David Beckham, Cartier, Dior, YSL Beauty, Helmut Lang, H&M, etc..  It goes without saying, the hefty price-tag, is due in large part to the aesthetic casing that has become synonymous with higher-end cosmetics.  This is not your ordinary everyday eyeshadow compact, but a piece of art 🙂

Amongst all Kjaer Weis organic products, her eyeshadows are not *Certified Organic, rather they are classified as *Certified Natural.  According to KW, some mineral ingredients are grown in areas that are unsupervised (aka: the wild) and therefore, cannot comply to strict organic regulations.  KW website conveniently discloses, in complete detail, all of the ingredients used in all the products; giving the consumer complete autonomy to make their own judgements/decisions (here).

Personally, I was taken aback to see just how small my little Divine pan compared to other mainstream brands.  However, I do see the brilliance in using such small pans–they fit in any palette, utilizing minimum space.

THE VERDICT:  If makeup could talk what would it say?

Makeup would tell you Kjaer Weis Divine and Magnetic eyeshadows are simply divine 🙂  I know a rather obvious description, but a more appropriate word could not have been used.  This is definitely a line that has spared no expense and every detail, down to the faux leather outer box, is simply exquisite.  Am I hooked?  Oh yeah..needless to say, the glistening inner corner and cheek highlighter, in the photos, is none other than KW Radiance Highlighter; however, we will save that story for another day 🙂   Until next time, be well, stay safe and be happy.
