There was a time when I dismissed The Vampire Diaries as just another young teen drama–that was until saucy Vampire Katherine Pierce entered the scene.  I mean look at her, how can anyone resist her charms, be it by compulsion or otherwise?  What sets Katherine apart from her virtuous Doppelgänger Elena, is her inflated ego, a cut-throat demeanor, impeccable style and fierce makeup 🙂  Her distinct cut-crease eye makeup is present in almost every scene.  So for this post, I bring you my rendition of Katherine Pierce’s eye makeup…now if only I could live forever, be forever young and feast on lasagna instead of resorting to exsanguination 🙂 One can dream…

The Vampire Diaries Katherine Pierce Inspired Eye Makeup Tutorial Products:
Make Up For Ever Artist Shadows, Giorgio Armani Eyes to Kill Solo, Cargo Waterproof Bronzer, Merle Norman Inner Liner, L’Oreal Infallible Pencil Liner, and Prestige Liner Pen.

  • **Nars eyeshadow base was used as an eyeshadow primer.  Apologies for the slight lighting variations; the perils of photographing in front of a window, dependant on natural lighting. 🙂

Outline your desired shape with a cool tone brown.

  • Start by choosing a cool tone brown eyeshadow.  Giorgio Armani Eyes to Kill Solo 4 Wood Eyeshadow (reviewed here) was applied using an angled brush (Memebox Meme Angled Brush) to outline the upper lash line and draw a line above my natural crease.  This method opens-up the eye area and gives the illusion of a larger lid space.
The Vampire Diaries Katherine Pierce Inspired Eye Makeup Tutorial:

Take a blending brush to blend out the harsh line.

  • Take any densely packed blending brush (Memebox Meme Eyeshadow Brush) and blend out the crease line, picking up color as you see fit.  Be mindful not to let any of the color seep on the lid area–Katherine loves a defined crease with a brightening lighter color on the lid.

Take a softer brush to add a warmer transition color over the edge of your cool brown shade.

Apply a matte flesh-colored eyeshadow to highlight the brow bone.

  • Apply a matte flesh-colored eyeshadow (MUFE M-510) to blend out the edges of your transition shade and to highlight the brow bone area.

Take a golden shade and apply the color to the middle of the moblie lid.

  • Apply a golden/champagne shimmer shade to the mobile lid area (a combination of MUFE ME-512 and I-648 was used).  The contrasting eyeshadow finishes are quite distinct and really makes eyes stand-out.

Apply any black liquid liner to the upper lash line.

Trace the liquid line with a deep black pencil liner.

  • Next, a liquid liner (Prestige Line & Style Ink Pen) was applied as a preliminary guide for my pencil liner (L’Oreal Extra Intense Liquid Pencil Eyeliner), being mindful not to cover the cool brown eyeshadow that was initially placed along the lash line.  This step can be omitted if you have a steady hand with your pencil liner; however, I find the two formulas produce a truly deep black color that is unbeatable.

Tight line the upper waterline with your gel liner of choice.

  • Tightline the upper waterline with any gel formula of your choosing (Inglot AMC Gel Liner #90).  Omitting this step would be a cardinal sin…gaps between the lashes is so not Katherine 🙂
The Vampire Diaries Katherine Pierce Inspired Eye Makeup Tutorial:

The Vampire Diaries Katherine Pierce Inspired Eye Makeup Tutorial:
Sharpen the edge of your winged liner with an angled Q-Tip.

  • Sharpen the edge of your winged liner with an angled Q-Tip dipped in lotion.  This step is essential in creating a gap between the upper and lower portion of the eye.
The Vampire Diaries Katherine Pierce Inspired Eye Makeup Tutorial:

The Vampire Diaries Katherine Pierce Inspired Eye Makeup Tutorial:
Apply a flesh-colored pencil to the lower waterline right to the edge of the eye, extending the color under the winged liner.

  • Next, is the quintessential Katherine makeup trick.  A flesh-colored pencil (Merle Norman Inner Liner) was applied on the waterline and extended outwards under the winged liner. Applying the color at the inner cusp, where the upper and lower lids meet, gives the illusion of a more youthful and lifted eye.
The Vampire Diaries Katherine Pierce Inspired Eye Makeup Tutorial:

The Vampire Diaries Katherine Pierce Inspired Eye Makeup Tutorial:
Blend-out the flesh color under the winged liner.

  • Blend out the flesh color pencil thoroughly, with a small eyeshadow brush (Meme Liner Brush).  To ensure the pencil base stays in place, I like to add an accompanying eyeshadow color on top (MUFE M-510).

The Vampire Diaries Katherine Pierce Inspired Eye Makeup Tutorial:
Apply the cool tone brown to the lower lash line.

  • Take your angled eyeliner brush and pick up some of the cool brown color (GA #4 Wood).  Line the lower lash line ¼ of the way, concentrating the color at the edge.  Following the natural curvature of your lower lashes, extend the color away from the eye.  This technique was very popular in the 60’s and 70’s and if you look closely, Katherine employs this method for all of her looks.

The Vampire Diaries Katherine Pierce Inspired Eye Makeup Tutorial:
Add a bronze color over the cool tone brown.

  • Add a bronze colored eyeshadow (Cargo Waterproof Bronzer) directly on top of the cool brown color on the lower lash line.  This step is optional, but as I have stated in the past, I believe adding a bronze hue on the lower lash line is very flattering.

THE VERDICT:  If makeup could talk what would it say?

Makeup would tell you this Katherine Pierce inspired makeup look has proven to be quite a hit.  I have worn this look many times and on each occasion, random people felt “compelled” to compliment my eye makeup.  Won’t you try it and see for yourself.  Be well, stay safe and be happy.

This blog centers around all the things I love.  However, sometimes there are things that are utilized (and loved) that are only mentioned in passing.  I mean really, there is only so much you can say about nail polish remover to excite the masses.  So for this post, I will briefly highlight all the things that have been on constant rotation in my routine as of late.  Don’t be surprised if an odd item makes its way toward the middle or end.  After all, I write in my kitchen with the company/distraction of my children, impending dinner and a perpetually hungry dog circling around me at all times 🙂  I hope you enjoy.

    1. Zoya Nail Polish Remover removes all traces of polish swiftly without drying out the nails or cuticles.  As an added bonus, the smell is so much more pleasant than your average drugstore polish remover.
    2. Oribe Superfine Strong Hairspray smells heavenly and the superfine mist holds the most challenging hair styles in place.  A word of caution, if used in excess the build up can feel heavy and unpleasant.
    3. Mountain Rose Herbs Argan Oil is exactly the same as Josie Maran Argan Oil, without the inflated price tag. I can purchase 8 oz. of MRH Argan Oil for $44 USD as opposed to 2 oz. of Josie Maran Argan Oil for $48.  Both are organic, cold-pressed and unrefined..you be the judge.
    4. Crystal Essence Deodorant is aluminum-free, natural and perfect for the fall/winter season.  The Pomegranate Fragrance is refreshing and non-offensive.  Even my husband and son love this brand.
    5. YSL Rouge Pur Couture The Mats 205 (reviewed here) has been worn on its own and paired with every lipstick in my collection.  The berry tone is beyond suitable for the upcoming cooler weather and the stain left behind is rather potent.
    6. Lipstick Queen Velvet Rope Lipstick in Entourage (reviewed here) is the best matte lipstick IMHO.  Do I need to say more?  Nope…I’ll stop gushing now.
    7. Hourglass Diffused Light (compared to Nars here) has been brought out of hibernation for the fall/winter season.  This ambient powder promises to diffuse the look of imperfections…yada, yada, yada….I use it with a dry BeautyBlender and use the press and roll method around the T-Zone area. However, do tread lightly with this beauty…too much will result in photo flashback in flash photography.
    8. Make Up For Ever Artist Shadows ME-654, M-510 and M-600 (reviewed here and here) have been used everyday since their purchase.  The creamy texture is beyond dreamy..try them and see.
    9. Giorgio Armani Eyes To Kill Solo #2 Armani Navy (reviewed here) is the best matte navy color on the market.  Not even Make Up For Ever has a navy of this caliber in their 210 color line-up.  If you are looking for truly exceptional quality matte colors..GA is your man.
    10. Rapidlash was purchased at the beginning of summer.  My typical coconut/castor oil mixture has served me very well, however, I wanted to see if I could achieve the same results in less time. Ladies this not only works, but it works a little too well, on me (I have to trim my lashes).  In all fairness, I have very long lashes naturally so my goal was to gain volume. Incredibly long lashes have not only been obtained using this serum, but it seems my once-upon-a-time voluminous lashes have magically returned.  Application has now been downsized to every other night, with the continued use of my coconut/castor oil conditioning every night.  Costco now carries this brand for $49 for a pack of two.  Bed, Bath and Beyond also carries this brand and you can use your 20% or $5 off coupons.
    11. Chikuhodo Z-5 Eyeshadow Brush (reviewed here) is used everyday.  This beauty applies eyeshadow so quickly and defuses the most pigmented colors perfectly.  If you would like to invest in one quality Chikuhodo Brush, this would be my pick.
    12. Memebox Meme Eyebrow Brush (reviewed here) is used everyday to apply my tight line color, gel liners and/or dampened to apply powder eyeshadows as liner.  This little gem is worth the expense of the whole Meme Brush Set.
    13. Minimal Jewelry is the theme de jour.  I’m enjoying the simplicity of wearing one statement ring (Pomellato Nude Ring) with my plain 2 inch gold hoop earrings, sans necklaces and bracelets.
    14. EZsizer are wonderful ring guards used to protect rings and/or make rings fit more securely.  If you are like me and have enlarged knuckles and thin fingers, then these are a must for you.  I purchase the medium size for winter and the petite size for summer.
    15. Spirulina (read about the health benefits here) is suitable for internal and external use.  This green algae is added everyday in my post workout shake and applied once a week as a detoxifying mask. The idea for this mask came from Olivia from The Unknown Beauty Blog (here); in her wonderful post she outlines all the details to concoct this amazing mask.  Your skin feels so soft after the mask has been removed; frankly, everyone needs to get on the Spirulina bandwagon..That’s right I said it 🙂

Memebox Meme Brush Set faux leather and glittered top brush holder.

Whenever I go on vacation, I have a difficult time discerning which makeup brushes to take along for the ride.  The customary solution is to take one primary brush and utilize him for everything.  My overworked foundation brush usually performs the roles of base, blusher, bronzer and powder brush.  So when Memebox contacted me to review their travel Memebox Meme Brush Set (normally $36 USD/ 6 brushes), I quickly pounced on the opportunity.  Could these delightful sextuplets be the answer to my dilemma?  After all, who could resist pink handled travel size brushes?  Not I my friends 🙂

According to Memebox:

Memebox curates the most trusted and popular Korean beauty products, while offering consumers the flexibility to choose by steering away from traditional subscription-based programs offered by most other sampling services. Customers can order from Memebox only when and as often as they want.

The Pros to Memebox Meme Brush Set:

  1. Adorable pink travel size brushes measure roughly 4¾ inches (12 cm) each.
  2. Comes with a faux-leather zip around pouch with glittered covering (glitter does not come off at all).
  3. Shorter handles yield more control.
  4. Perfect for young girls starting out in makeup.
  5. Lightweight and compact design is ideal for travel and for carrying around in a makeup bag.
  6. Pouch can house additional makeup items, such as a lipstick and mirror.
  7. A complete look can be achieved with this set, with the exception of foundation.
  8. Angled contour brush is surprisingly soft (not scratchy) giving a perfect diffused look to bronzer and blush.
  9. The brow brush is soft and dense enough to apply gel liner and to tight line the upper water line.
  10. The dual-ended eyeshadow and lip brush (my favorite) is ideal for color placement and smoking out any liner or cream shadow.  The lip liner end has a retractable closure, which can also be used for precise spot concealing.
  11. The eyeshadow brush is dense enough to lay down color without being scratchy or flimsy.
  12. For a limited time, US customers can purchase this set for $18 USD ($3 for each brush).

The Cons to Memebox Meme Brush Set:

  1. Washing these brushes before use is a must to remove the protective spray coating on the bristles.
  2. The dual-fiber brush shed quite a few hairs during the first washing.
  3. The eyeshadow brush is composed of Linsey-Woolsey, a combination of wool/cotton or wool/linen.
  4. Made in China…but then again, so are Bobbi Brown Brushes.

THE VERDICT:  If makeup could talk what would it say?

Makeup would tell you Memebox Meme Brush Set has really made a remarkable impression.  Will these little pink darlings replace my higher end brushes?  No; however, the dual-ended brush and contour brush alone are worth the expense of this entire set.  Bottom-line, totally worth $36 and a steal for $18; now all I need is a vacation destination  🙂  Be well, stay safe and be happy.
