Yves Saint Laurent Vinyl Cream 407 Carmin Session review and comparisons.

YSL 407 Carmin Session.

Yves Saint Laurent Vinyl Cream 407 Carmin Session

Lip stains are like an illusive British spy–they’re suppose to be put together, well-mannered, strong, all-knowing and seeing, charm the pants off of you and stick around until the mission is completed.  Yves Saint Laurent Vinyl Cream 407 Carmin Session ($36 USD/ 5.5 mL) claims “the creamy formula provides 10-hour wear and all day comfort so lips look and feel beautiful.”  However, what do you do when your lip stain turns out to perform more like Johnny English (a JB parody), instead of a James Bond?  You pick yourself up, go back to the store, return that sucker and hope “Q” gets his act together for the next release.  Can you tell where this post is heading?  I hope you enjoy.

Yves Saint Laurent Vinyl Cream Packaging:

YSL 407 Carmin Session.

Yves Saint Laurent Vinyl Cream 407 Carmin Session.

  • The sleek, all black outer casing of the new Vinyl Cream Stains is understated, yet elegant.  Essentially, the packaging size and shape is the same as their Glossy Stain.  The latter has a golden top and the new Vinyl Cream Stains are designed with a black top.  Upon closer inspection, both lines have many other similarities.
  • The ingredients for both lines differ marginally, they contain the same amount of product, with a matching price tag.  If you are a fan of the original GS, then the Vinyl Cream Stains will please you to no end.  Personally, I was not a fan of the original GS, and these new creations are not that far off.

  • One of the line’s major selling points is the “diamond-shaped applicator.”  The graduated angled slants are designed to pick-up and hold just the right amount of product without having to redip the wand.  I would say this is claim is true, however because of the formula’s thin consistency, too much product collects on the head which results in a messy application.  If anything the applicator needs to hold less product to avoid smudging (especially in the corners of the mouth).
  • As you can tell from the above photos, the head is too long and thin with a defined pointed tip. Personally, the point is what makes this applicator a fail for my needs.  I prefer a rounded, more cushioned tip to outline the lips.  IMHO, YSL’s diamond tip and frail girth does not feel comfortable, nor does the triangular edge fit the contours of my lips very well.  I’m not saying a defined line is impossible to achieve, only that it takes more work than it should.
  • The precisely cut fibers are well done, but when molded against such an acutely shaped head, the softened feel is somewhat compromised.  With time, I can foresee the fibers wearing away quickly in certain areas.

Yves Saint Laurent Vinyl Cream Wear:

YSL 407 Carmin Session.

Yves Saint Laurent Vinyl Cream 407 Carmin Session.

YSL 407 Carmin Session.

Yves Saint Laurent Vinyl Cream 407 Carmin Session.

  • Based on the advertising claims, YSL Vinyl Cream Stains are supposed to wear comfortably for 10 hours and leave a noticeable stain after the color fades.  As you can tell from the above photos, 407 Carmin Session does not leave such an impressive tint behind when the color is wiped away.  In fact, when put into play on the lips, the stain settled unevenly, with certain areas completely bare.
  • As for the wear, 407 Carmin Session lasted for two hours full strength, then quickly faded away by the third hour.  When worn with a lipliner, the results were not improved in the least.  Oddly enough, my liner faded completely by the third hour as well.  This has never happened with another formula.
  • This beautiful rosy brown hue performed more favorably (three hours full strength) when talking, drinking, and laughing were omitted from the equation.  I can only surmise when lips are in constant motion, the formula evaporates at a faster rate.  Regardless, the “10-hour wear” claim is a gargantuan exaggeration on the company’s part.  Perhaps, as with all lines, the darker colors would fare better than the light and medium shades.
  • As for the hydration aspect, I can confirm my lips never felt dry when wearing the cream stain. However, the next day I did experience slight flaking on my bottom lip.  I can only conclude the high level of alcohol (seventh ingredient) in the formula may be responsible for this occurrence. The other “alcohols” in the ingredients act as emollients–mostly artificial, but not as drying as straight up alcohol.
YSL 407 Carmin Session.

Wearing Yves Saint Laurent Vinyl Cream 407 Carmin Session.

  • I would highly advise, those with fragrance sensitivities, sample the formula before purchasing.  The combination of chemical/perfume/sweet fragrance (to my senses) is rather overpowering.  I wore this cream stain a total of three times and on each occasion, I could not wait to remove it from my lips.
ysl

Yves Saint Laurent Vinyl Cream 407 Carmin Session ingredient list.

  • A final bone of contention is the addition of Sodium Lauryl Sulfate to the ingredients.  This chemical is a foaming agent in shampoos, detergents, and an emulsifier in cosmetics.  Just like mineral oil, SLF is, for lack of a better word, CHEAP.  So why in the world is it found in an almost forty dollar lip cream stain?  I do not have an answer, but judging by the majority of synthetic ingredients, I would say low-cost manufacturing was an objective.

Comparisons:
Dior Addict Fluid Stick 893 Trompe L’Oeil, Yves Saint Laurent Vinyl Cream 407 Carmin Session, and Dior Fluid Stick 499 Avant-Garde.

  • I cannot help but feel, YSL was trying to mimic Dior Addict Fluid Stick’s likeness.  However, everything from the applicator, to the “high-impact vinyl shine” is sub par when compared to Fluid
    Sticks.
  • As you can tell, Dior’s applicator head is so much more robust at the tip.  The rounded tip and contoured edges glide on the lips so smoothly and comfortably.  I am even able to cheat a fuller lip simply by pushing the tip right up against the edge the lip line.

  • As you can tell on the arm and lip swatches, Dior has YSL beat in color and shine. If you look at the arm swatches carefully, you can actually see how streaky YSL’s formula is deposited, largely due to the pointy applicator head.  Dior’s cushioned applicator head helps level out the rich formula instantly, without much coaxing.
  • Dior’s formula (reviewed here, here, here, and here) is also composed of a plethora of synthetic ingredients.  However, the performance surpasses YSL Cream Stains and the fragrance is nowhere near as pungent as 407 Carmin Session.

**Yves Saint Laurent Vinyl Cream 407 Carmin Session is made in France and sold at sephora.com, saks.com, yslbeautyus.com, lord&taylor.com, etc..**

THE VERDICT:  If Makeup Could Talk what would it say?

Makeup would state the obvious:  I am not a fan of Yves Saint Laurent Vinyl Cream 407 Carmin Session.  Everything from the applicator head, weak staining ability, fantastical 10-hour wear claim, and heavily fragrance formula just does not sit right with me.  I think Johnny English’s expression below sums up my thoughts perfectly.  🙂  Until next time, be well, stay safe and be happy.

Q, what is this bloody thing on my lips?” (Johnny English photo courtesy of martianoddity.wordpress.com).

YSL Rouge Pur Couture The Mats 206 and 205 review and photos.

YSL Rouge Pur Couture The Mats 206 Grenant Satisfaction and 205 Prune Virgin.

YSL Rouge Pur Couture The Mats 206 Grenat Satisfaction and 205 Prune Virgin.

Clearly, I have a tremendous weakness when it comes to dark red lipsticks.  I can never have enough and I make it a point to use all of my colors regularly.  So when a lovely Instagram kindred spirit, Zvoncnjica26, suggested I should try YSL Rouge Pur Couture The Mats 205 ($35 USD/3.8g), I immediately made it a point to visit my YSL counter the following day.  To my surprise, YSL Rouge Pur Couture The Mats collection was downsized at many locations, thus making the acquisition of 205 nearly impossible.  Did this stop me?  Come now…does a tigress abandon her prey?  Once IMCT sets her sights on something, there is no stopping the beast 🙂  I hope you enjoy.

YSL Swatches L-R: YSL Rouge Pur Couture 32 Pourpre Carmin, 206 Grenant Satisfaction, and 205 Prune Virgin.

  • YSL Rouge Pur Couture 32 Pourpre Carmin is basically the glossier version of 206 Grenat Satisfaction.

The Pros of YSL Rouge Pur Couture The Mats 206 and 205:

  1. Amazing pigmentation.
  2. Glides on the lips evenly despite the denser matte consistency.
  3. 206 is a beautiful brown based burgundy red that screams…S-E-X-Y.
  4. 205 is a gorgeous dark plum based red–definitely not for the faint of heart.
  5. The matte finish has more dimension than your typical flat matte lipstick.
  6. Lasts 6 hours when used with It Cosmetics Perfect Red lipliner (reviewed here).
  7. Does not feather into fines lines.
  8. Can be applied lightly for a hint of color or full-on for truly attention-getting results.
  9. Noticable staining effect when color has worn off.
  10. Remarkably hydrating and comfortable to wear throughout the day.
  11. Lightweight gold packaging is very luxe.
  12. Formulated without parabens or mineral oil, but loaded with silicones.
  13. Pairs beautifully with Dior Addict Fluid Sticks (reviewed here) for added shine.
  14. Contains 3.8 grams of product…much more than the standard high-end lipstick.
  15. Made in France.

The Cons of YSL Rouge Pur Couture The Mats 206 and 205:

  1. 205 Prune Virgin, the original shade I was looking for, was “out-of-stock” in three major department stores.  One sales associate declared a new shipment would arrive later in the week, another lady claimed the line was being discontinued, and finally, the last woman said she never even heard of “The Mats” line…Someone please remind me again, why I’m paying a premium?
  2. Although lovely to look at, the gold packaging attracts fingerprints on contact. Great if you are a spy and require a suspect’s fingerprint to enter a top-secret lab…I’ve been watching way too much Revenge and Arrow.
  3. Adding an additional layer to an existing layer feels heavy and can look caky.
  4. Saks.com was the only online retailer that carried 205, which was listed with the regular YSL Pur Couture Lipsticks as N205.

  • For the above photos, YSL 206 Grenat Satisfaction was applied directly over It Cosmetics Perfect Red lipliner, then lightly outlined with a lip brush.  I purchased this color as an experiment to see if the formula was to my liking.  Clearly, the color, formula and texture were fantastic, thus spawning an obsessive online search for 205 Prune Virgin 🙂

  • For the above photos, YSL 205 Prune Virgin was applied in the same manner as 206 Grenat Satisfaction. This deep plum red is truly bold, yet versatile.  I found when I applied 205 lightly, the stain remained for most of the day and also paired beautifully with a light layer of Dior Addict Fluid Stick in 893 Trompe L’Oeil.

YSL Rouge Pur Couture The Mats come in 7 shades:

  • 201 Orange Imagine (Nordstrom and Saks)
  • 203 Rouge Rock (Nordstrom and Saks)
  • 204 Rouge Scandal (Saks.com listed with Rouge Pur Couture)
  • 205 Prune Virgin (Saks.com listed with Rouge Pur Couture)
  • 206 Grenat Satisfaction (Nordstrom, Saks and Bloomingdales)
  • 207 Rose Perfecto (Nordstrom and Bloomingdales)
  • 208 Fuchsia Fetiche (Saks.com)

THE VERDICT:  If makeup could talk what would it say?

Makeup would tell you YSL Rouge Pur Courture The Mats 206 and 205 are top of the line.  The pigmentation, formula, texture and longevity have impressed me beyond my expectations–perfect colors if you will, for the upcoming fall season.  Many thanks to the lovely Zvoncnjica26 for opening my eyes to this line.  Are you tempted?  Be well, stay safe and be happy.

Yves Saint Laurent Long-Wear Cream Eyeliner 3 Noir Bronze.

Yves Saint Laurent Long-Wear Cream Eyeliner 3 Noir Bronze ($30 USD/ 2.8g) has been on my “must-buy” list for the longest time.  This mossy golden shade appeared to be the perfect shadow for my coloring, without being too adolescent or outrageous.  Unlike many colored liners that appear garish, Noir Bronze possess such a versatile appeal, I doubt anyone will be able to resist its beauty.

The Pros to Yves Saint Laurent Long-Wear Cream Eyeliner 3 Noir Bronze:

  1. Beautiful glistening mossy green shade, which is actually composed of a blackened base with gold and bronze pearl throughout.
  2. Extremely creamy and opaque.
  3. Glides along the lash line without skipping.
  4. Creamy texture is easily blended for use as an eyeshadow.
  5. Setting time is roughly one minute–plenty of time to make any necessary adjustments.
  6. Color is noticeably dark, but not so much so, as to be mistaken for a black liner.
  7. Lasts all day, over a primer for 12 hours+ without any fading or flaking.
  8. Waterproof formula is ideal for hooded eyes and oily lids.
  9. Looks spectacular with all eye colors, especially brown…YAY!!
  10. Can be applied with a variety of tools: angled eyeliner brush, pointed eyeliner brush, shadow brush, natural and synthetic fiber brushes, etc.
  11. Amazing shelf-life; my YSL #7 Gold Star Cream Liner is over two years old and remains as silky smooth as the day it was purchased.
  12. Small amount needed for maximum color impact.
  13. Can be applied on the waterline.
  14. 7 sophisticated shades offered: 1 Deep Black, 2 Ashy Black, 3 Noir Bronze, 4 Sea Black, 5 Cherry Black, 6 Jade Black, 7 Gold Star.
  15. Formulated without parabens or mineral oil.

The Cons to Yves Saint Laurent Long-Wear Cream Eyeliner 3 Noir Bronze:

  1. Small opening hinders the use of fingers (except my pinky finger).
  2. Sephora only carries 4 out of 7 colors offered.  #7 Gold Star can only be purchased from yslbeauty website.
  3. Made in Korea, I suspect the same manufacture as Shu Uemura Gel Liners.
  4. No other cons…smoother and more consistent than Bobbi Brown gel liners.

  • For the above photos, I used my Memebox Meme Angled Eyeliner brush (reviewed here) to apply Noir Bronze to the upper lash line.  When used as an eyeliner, the color morphed into more of a darkened bronze/khaki color.  Whatever the case, the result was simply stunning.

THE VERDICT:  If makeup could talk what would it say?

Makeup would tell you Yves Saint Laurent Long-Wear Cream Eyeliner 3 Noir Bronze is spectacular. These little pots of loveliness are the best gel/cream liners I have ever tried.  Some may find the limited color selection too conservative, but I happen to enjoy the edited sophisticated choices.  What is your favorite gel liner?  Until next time, be well, stay safe and be happy.

YSL 11 Prune Impertinente Baby Doll Kiss and Blush review, photos and comparisons.

YSL 11 Prune Impertinente Baby Doll Kiss and Blush.

YSL 11 Prune Impertinente Baby Doll Kiss and Blush.

For the longest time, women have been using their lipsticks as multi-taskers.  Presumably, swiping the same shade on the lips and cheeks seemed advantageous during a busy morning routine.  Was it a matter of convenience, a time saver, laziness, or lack of blusher choices?  Whatever the reasoning, it was genius! So when YSL created their new 2-in-1 Baby Doll Kiss and Blush products, I knew a personal in-store visit was in order.  YSL 11 Prune Impertinente Baby Doll Kiss and Blush ($40 USD/10ml) was the color that was unique in my mini cream blush collection.  The wine tone and handy packaging was grounds for immediate purchase.  According to YSL:

Kiss your cheeks. Blush your lips. Play with color and mix and match your lips and cheeks. Yves Saint Laurent introduces the latest innovation in the edgy Baby Doll attitude. This 2 in 1 ultra blendable air whipped mousse beautifully highlights your lips and cheeks with a sensual soft matte finish. Available in 12 signature YSL shades.

The Pros of YSL 11 Prune Impertinente Baby Doll Kiss and Blush:

  1. Beautiful soft wine/plum color–great color for medium and darker skins.
  2. Packaged in a sturdy glass container (I prefer glass so the product does not dry out..some may not).
  3. Portable compact packaging for on-the-go lip color and blush application.
  4. Can be worn softly or opaque.
  5. Soft smooth mousse-like texture.
  6. Velvet matte finish.
  7. Lightweight, non sticky formula.
  8. Non-drying formula makes reapplication on the lips a pleasure.
  9. A fresh layer can be applied over an existing layer without looking caky or bleeding into fine lines around the lips.
  10. Wears off evenly on the lips with a noticeable stain left behind.
  11. Intense color payoff and longevity when used as a blush.
  12. Colors can be mixed and matched to create your own custom color.
  13. A powder blush can be worn on top to create another custom color.
  14. Typical “watermelon” scent..similar to YSL cream blushes.  Not as strong as YSL Rouge Volupte.
  15. Amazing applicator can be used to create sharp edges and to deposit light or full coverage.
  16. Formulated without mineral oil or parabens (however, silicones are the main ingredients).

The Cons to YSL 11 Prune Impertinente Baby Doll Kiss and Blush:

  1. Very expensive–however, the amount given is amazing 10ml/$40 USD compared to 6ml/$32 USD for Chanel Rouge Extrait De Gloss (which does not last on me at all).
  2. Lasting power on the lips is 2½-3 hours.
  3. Lighter colors may have less lasting power on the lips.
  4. Dries quickly when used as a blush–prompt blending is required.
  5. Glosses will break down the color and cause bleeding into fine lines–tread lightly.
  6. Exclusive in-store to Nordstrom..online ordering is a must for those who do not have access to Nordstrom.

When used as a blush, YSL 11 Prune Impertinente Baby Doll Kiss and Blush had outstanding lasting power.  The above photos show how the color appears when worn together on the lips and cheeks.  My Wayne Goss Brush 01 (reviewed here) sheered out this very intense shade beautifully.  Personally, I do not have any plum cream blushes in my collection, therefore, 11 PI was my obvious choice.  I was tempted by the other pink colors in the line-up, but I have my Chanel 64 Inspiration (reviewed here) from last year and could not justify the purchase of another pink cream blush.

THE VERDICT:  If makeup could talk what would it say?

Makeup would tell you, even though the concept of a lipstick worn as a blush is not incredibly innovative, I must admit YSL 11 Prune Impertintente Baby Doll Kiss and Blush formula has won me over.  The smooth texture, velvety matte finish on the lips, portable packaging, amazing longevity on the cheeks, buildable coverage, and fantastic color selection are all encompassed in this 2-in-1 product.  I am quite content with my selection.  Say you will try at least one..yes?  Be well and stay safe.
