Unsung Heroes: Non-Makeup Beauty Essentials.

Unsung Heroes: Non-Makeup Beauty Essentials.

Makeup is a definite passion of mine; the colors, textures and various brands are all exciting and delightful. However, similar to the saying, “Behind every great man is a great woman,” the same can be said about certain products used behind the scenes prior to makeup application.  For today’s post, I present my Non-Makeup Beauty Essentials–for without these Unsung Heroes IMCT could not be 🙂  I hope you enjoy.

    • Huggies Baby Wipes are not used for their intended purpose, but rather as makeup wipes to clean up any messes incurred during makeup application.  These wipes are very handy to quickly clean my brushes on a daily basis.  Simply add some makeup remover on one end of the wipe, swirl your brush in the saturated area, and blot it clean on the opposite end of the wipe.
    • Shiseido Facial Cottons have been hyped-up to no end on blogs for years–and with good reason. These cotton pads are manufactured in Japan and are known for their tightly woven structure.  The lack of lint remnant on lashes after makeup removal, makes this product worth every penny.
    • Cotton Hand Towel (preferably darker colors) is placed on my lap during makeup application.  I’m a big fan of using the same brush for multiple colors/uses; this towel gives me the convenience of wiping my brushes clean in-between color placement. I can’t tell you how many times my Chikuhodo Z-5, Make Up For Ever 110, and Billy #12 have been gently swiped across this towel.

Unsung Heroes: Non-Makeup Beauty Essentials:
Rubbing Alcohol 91% used to disinfect my DermaRoller.

    • Rubbing Alcohol 91% is used to disinfect my powdered eyeshadows and DermaRoller (discussed here) once a week.  Simply transfer a small amount of alcohol into a spray bottle and mist directly onto eyeshadows.  The higher percentage aids in faster alcohol evaporation so eyeshadows are ready for use within a couple of minutes (important for makeup artist).  To clean my DermaRoller, I simply fill a small Sake cup with alcohol and soak my roller for 15 minutes, to ensure all bacteria has been obliterated.

Unsung Heroes: Non-Makeup Beauty Essentials:
Baking Soda with toothpaste on the Oral-B toothbrush.

    • Arm and Hammer Baking Soda may seem like an unlikely item to be included in this post, but this multi-purpose wonder has been around for ages and its gentle abrasive composition, helps remove stains, plaque and tarter from teeth.  Transferring a small amount of baking soda to a Sake cup seems to be the most efficient way to access the product without contaminating the rest of the powder.  I simply wet my toothbrush, add some toothpaste and dip the dampened brush into some baking soda.  Once a day, everyday (in addition to a regular cleaning at night) seems to be sufficient for keeping teeth clean and healthy.  Let’s face it, all the makeup in the world will not help someone with unsightly oral hygiene…just saying.
    • Oral B Professional Care Power Toothbrush is one of the most important hygienic tools.  The powerful brush action is so much more effective at cleaning teeth than any manual toothbrush.  If you don’t own one, GET ONE!!
    • Scunci No Slip Octopus Jaw Clips are the only small clips that work well at holding my abundantly long, fine hair in place.  I use them to pin back my hair during makeup application and for a simple sophisticated look on lazy hair days.  You can find several of these bad boys scattered throughout my house at any given time.

Unsung Heroes: Non-Makeup Beauty Essentials:
Regular Q-Tip vs. Precision Tipped Cotton Swabs.

Non-Makeup Beauty Essentials: Winged liner using Precision Tipped Cotton Non-Makeup Beauty Essentials

Unsung Heroes: Non-Makeup Beauty Essentials:
Winged liner using Precision Tipped Cotton Swabs.

      • Precision Tipped Cotton Swabs were the inspiration for this post.  A few days ago, I ran out of these babies and found myself scrabbling trying to utilize a regular Q-Tip to achieve a crisp edge to my winged liner.  Not only did I become incredibly frustrated with the whole ordeal, but it was at that moment I realized how indispensable these swabs are in my life.  To achieve a crisp eyeliner edge, simply dip the precision tipped cotton swab in any lotion and gently swirl the saturated swab on the back of the hand to disperse the lotion evenly around the tip.  Place the saturated swab directly at the edge of the top lash line and drag the swab outwardly and upwardly until you have reached your desired angle.  The tightly woven design is marketed for manicure use, but the lint-free construction and sharpened tapered tip is the secret to my perfectly winged success.
      • Clear Eyes Eye Drops are used every morning to relieve my parched eyeballs.  Due to the dry heat produced from my steam heaters, my eyes become red and itchy.  These little droplets of moisture provide the relief I so desperately need to look and feel whole again.
      • Tweezerman 5½ inch Styling Shears have been in my collection for 5 years.  These sharp little shears are used to trim my wooly brows every week.  With careful maintenance, the blades have remained as sharp as the day they were purchased.
      • Billy B Brow and Lash Groomer is the only brand that folds in completely and has two of the most useful tools on each end.  I foolishly purchased a drugstore dupe, only to have both ends fall off after a month’s use.  This particular guy has been with me for two years and the construction has never faltered in all that time.  The brow brush is used everyday to blend out my brow color and the lash comb is quite useful for getting clumpy mascara to behave in an acceptable manner.
      • Tweezerman Petite Tweezer Set have been with me for almost 10 years.  I literally use these tweezers everyday to remove stray hairs around my brows and upper lip area.  I cannot image what a hairy mess I would be if these beauties were not in my life.  One of the perks of being Italian is having a lot of hair and one of the downfalls is having a lot of DARK hair.  🙂   These bad boys help me control a potentially uncontrollable facial hair situation.

THE VERDICT:  If makeup could talk what would it say?

Makeup would tell you these items really are irreplaceable in my life.  What are some of your Non-Makeup Unsung Heroes?  Until next time, be well stay safe and be happy.

Makeup is one of most minimally invasive paths we can take to alter our appearance.  However, after a certain age, we mortals must face a devastating fact: we age and there is nothing we can do to stop the progression. Wrinkles creep up from who knows where, hair begins to grow thicker in all the wrong places, and skin becomes either overly dry or extremely oily. For this post, I will share with you some of my Personal Care Essentials (other than makeup) that I use to combat the daily reality–I will never be an ageless eternal vampire 🙂  I hope you find this helpful.

Personal Care Essentials: Emjoi Micro-Pedi.

Personal Care Essentials:
Emjoi Micro-Pedi.

  • Emjoi Micro-Pedi ($29-40 USD) is a fantastic alternative to the PedEgg or Microplain Pedicure Rasp used in salons.  Regardless, if you have a mild or an excessive case of dry skin around the heels of your feet (a recent occurrence), Micro-Pedi works wonders at removing dry skin gently and safely.  Remember to apply gentle pressure during use, otherwise the roll will not spin properly.  I acquired my unit from Costco with two extra refill rolls for $29.
Personal Care Essentials: Emjoi Epilator.

Personal Care Essentials:
Emjoi Epilator.

  • Emjoi Mini Corded Epilator ($30-70 USD) contains 30 tweezers that rotate simultaneously inwardly to remove unwanted hair from my arms and occasionally around the upper lip area.  First time users will feel a sting, but after a couple of months of use, the follicles become so weak the pain subsides (this will vary) and regrowth is greatly reduced, especially on the arms.  Personally, my hairless arms look more youthful and jewelry looks so much more appealing on a blank canvas.
Personal Care Essentials: Dermaroller 500 needles 1mm.

Personal Care Essentials:
Derma Roller 500 needles 1.0 mm.

  • I have been using Derma Rollers aka: collagen induction therapy ($20-60 USD) for almost four years.  I was always hesitant to discuss this device, because many people do not believe in its effectiveness.  Using this wondrous tool once a week, has reduce the appearance of wrinkles on my face and improved the overall texture of my skin, by stimulating the flow of collagen to the affected areas.  As an added bonus, facial moisturizers are able to penetrate the skin more effectively.  There are a slew of online retailers, however, be mindful to purchase from a reputable seller that sells sterilized sealed stainless steel rollers.  Remember, Derma Rollers will not yield overnight results; time and consistency are crucial for favorable results.  For more information about Derma Rollers and how to use this product read here.
Personal Care Essentials: Gigi Space Saver Wax Warmer and Gigi Honee.

Personal Care Essentials:
Gigi Space Saver Wax Warmer and Gigi Honee.

  • Gigi Space Saver Wax Warmer ($20-40 USD) and Gigi Honee ($15-25 USD) were purchased with the intent to wax whenever I wanted, in the convenience of my home.  Personally, waxing once a month is sufficient to thoroughly remove hair on the upper lip region and around the nostrils (essential especially if you have dark hair).  For in-between waxing sessions, I prefer to use a facial razor, tweezers and an epilator to reduce unnecessary stress and stretching of the skin.  This particular unit has been in my possession for eight years and the Honee wax has been going strong for the past four years.  Both items are stored in a decorative box in my closet for my convenience.
Personal Care Essentials: Facial Razor and Tweezerman Mini Tweezer Set.

Personal Care Essentials:
Facial Razor and Tweezerman Petite Tweezer Set.

  • Facial razors are essential in my everyday beauty routine, they are used to remove the “peach fuzz” surrounding the perimeter of my face.  I know many people believe shaving the delicate hairs around the face will result in increased hair growth, but that is simply not true.  On women, facial hair regrows as finely as ever.  Shaving once a week gives me a smooth and even canvas to apply makeup; you would be surprised how smooth and supple foundation appears after shaving.  My facial razor is also used on a daily basis to remove stray hairs above my eyebrows, along the upper lip region and around the nostrils.  I purchase my folded razor from my local Asian market, but you can acquire a variety of brands online or from your local Target.
  • Tweezerman Petite Tweezer Set ($25 USD) has been in my possession for eight years.  The slanted edge tweezer is used everyday to groom my eyebrows and any stray hair that should arise. The pointed edge tweezer is occasionally used to remove embedded hairs and splinters.
Personal Care Essentials: Clarosonic Mia and Cleansing Cloth.

Personal Care Essentials:
Clarisonic Mia and Cleansing Cloth.

  • Clarisonic Mia ($100 USD) needs no introduction, this device is fantastic for thoroughly cleansing and exfoliating the face.  I prefer to use this in the evening, as a final step to ensure all makeup has been removed.  No matter the hour or the exhaustion I may feel, I simply will not retire for the evening without properly washing my face.
  • Textured Cleansing Cloths ($2-6 USD) are just as effective as the Mia, for a fraction of the price. Just like the Mia, there are all grades of textures ranging from gentle to coarse.  Personally, the coarse cloths work best for my skin type.  I also have a cloth in my shower in lieu of a shower sponge; the length of these clothes are quite useful for exfoliating and cleansing hard-to-reach areas such as the back.

THE VERDICT:  If makeup could talk what would it say?

Makeup would tell you proper care of your skin is essential for a healthy and radiant complexion.  Hair removal can have an enormous impact on someone’s overall appearance.  Simple everyday maintenance is the key to looking and feeling younger.  Are all these devices and techniques the secret to eternal youth? No, however, I believe if you are mentally able to always hold on to your “youthful innocence” (Under the Tuscan Sun) then that feeling will manifest itself in your looks..no matter your age 🙂  After all, Lestat, Louie, Bill, Eric, Selene, Stephan, Elena and Damon can’t be the only pretty faces in the crowd.  What are some of your favorite personal care essentials you cannot live without?  Be well, stay safe and be happy.
