NYX Proof-It Waterproof Eye Shadow Primer was Love at First Swipe!

NYX Proof-It

NYX Proof-It Waterproof Eye Shadow Primer.

Lately, I have been on a mission to find more affordable products that perform similarly to the big name brands.  Admittedly, I do not have the greatest luck with drugstore cosmetics, in my experience they do not perform as well as higher-end brands.  However, when a spanking new 10 foot NYX Cosmetics display was unveiled at my local Bed, Bath and Beyond, my attention was immediately drawn to the NYX Proof-It Waterproof Eye Shadow Primer ($6.99 USD/7ml).  This affordable little marvel has managed to kick my high-end primer to the curb. 🙂

The Pros to NYX Proof-It Waterproof Eye Shadow Primer:

  1. Small amount needed to create a smooth, clear waterproof canvas.
  2. Eyeshadows bond instantly to the primer.
  3. Eyeshadow colors are more vibrant without any fading throughout the day.
  4. Drier texture is ideal for oiler lids and hot/humid weather conditions.
  5. Skin does not feel dry or tight.
  6. Truly waterproof–eyeshadows remain intact even under extreme dampened conditions (see below).
  7. Removes easily at night with any eye makeup remover.
  8. Small container is compact and can be stored anywhere.
  9. Amount/price ratio is unbeatable for the quality.
  10. Outer packaging is well thought out with clearly displayed directions.
  11. Available from various online and local retailers.
  12. Formulated without parabens, mineral oil or fragrance.
  13. Made in Taiwan.

The Cons to NYX Proof-It Waterproof Eye Shadow Primer:

  1. Feels tacky and heavy if too much product is applied to the skin–less is more people!
  2. Eyeshadows can appear patchy and creasing will occur if the primer is not given sufficient time to dry.
  3. Due to the drier texture, matte eyeshadows are prone to “drag” if one is heavy-handed with their  application.
NYX Proof-It

NYX Proof-It Waterproof Eye Shadow Primer applied to a clean lid.

  • Dispensing the right amount of product is crucial with this primer.  I prefer to utilize only the amount that comes out on the applicator head for each eye.  Using my ring finger, I spread the product out in a thin layer across the entire eye area and under the lash line.  IMHO, the end results are compromised if too much product is applied–this is a case of less is best.
  • Another important point is to let the primer dry/set on the skin before eyeshadow application.  Again, this is were the bad reviews come into play; the directions clearly state to let the product “dry for a bit”.  Despite this ambiguous term, I found 1-2 minutes is more than sufficient for the primer to set.  If you do not possesses the patience for this step, then this primer is not for you.
NYX Proof-It

NYX Proof-It Waterproof Eye Shadow Primer used with all matte shadows.

  • Matte shadows are notoriously difficult to blend-out when paired with drier eyeshadow primers. To combat this issue, simply apply a flesh colored eyeshadow across the lid after the primer has set–this method significantly reduces eyeshadow drag.  However, a light hand paired with a soft brush usually results in the smoothest outcome.
  • For this look, Giorgio Armani Eyes to Kill Solo Vulcano was applied thickly along the lash line and blended upward.  MUFE M-510 was applied on the rest of the mobile lid and brow bone with MAC Uninterrupted in the crease.  The look lasted a full 12 hours in perfect condition.
NYX Proof-It with Kjaer Weis eyeshadows

NYX Proof-It Waterproof Eye Shadow Primer used with Kjaer Weis Magnetic and Divine natural/ organic formulated eyeshadows.

  • If you are one to favor natural/organic eyeshadow brands, NYX Proof-It works beautifully with these formulas as well.  For the above photo, Kjaer Weis Magnetic Eyeshadow was applied to the mobile lid and crease with Kjear Weis Divine Eyeshadow on the outer corner.  The underlying golden pearl in Magnetic became evident over Proof-It–gorgeous!!  This look stayed true for 10 hours (longer if I hadn’t remove it).
Colourpop So Quiche

NYX Proof-It Waterproof Eye Shadow Primer used with ColourPop So Quiche shimmery eyeshadow.

  • If you are one to favor metallic/shimmery shadows, NYX Proof-It also worked beautifully with ColourPop’s So Quiche Eyeshadow (review coming soon).  The insanely abundant pink shimmer in this shadow was out in full force (sadly my camera was unable to capture the pink shimmer).  This look stayed true for a full 10 hours (longer if I hadn’t removed it).  BTW, MAC Uninterrupted in the crease area never looked so good.  🙂
NYX

  • Should you favor a minimal look, NYX Proof-It worked beautifully to create a smooth canvas for my Guerlain Powder Foundation on the mobile lid with MAC Uninterrupted mixed with Sweet As Cocoa in the crease.

  • A variety of eyeshadow textures and brands ranging from inexpensive to high-end, held up remarkably well over NYX Proof-It.  In the above photos, all the eyeshadows were subjected to warm running water for 5 minutes; notice how vibrant and undisturbed all the colors remained. I believe the waterproof claim is totally justified!!
  1. Burberry Pale Barley ($29 USD): Rich satin golden taupe
  2. ColourPop So Quiche ($5 USD): Metallic taupe with pink shimmer
  3. Giorgio Armani Vulcano ($32 USD): Rich matte aubergine

THE VERDICT:  If makeup could talk what would it say?

Makeup would tell you NYX Proof-It Waterproof Eye Shadow Primer has officially replaced my Nars Primer–$7 as opposed to $25–need I say more?  Until next time, be well, stay safe and be happy.

Date Night Look Lip Combo:
Jordana Plush Plum and Estee Lauder Electric Wine.

Recently, my husband and I attended a last minute event and a quick and simple look was required.  For this Date Night Look, time was of the essence, so I decided to play up my lips rather than waste time creating an elaborate eye look.  Truth be told, I did not alter my daytime makeup in the least, but simply changed the lip combo. Adding an extra necklace or two also helps to dress up any outfit.  I hope you find this helpful and can use some ideas for your next date night 🙂

Hourglass Veil Mineral Primer verses Koh Gen Do Makeup Color Base.

Hourglass Veil Mineral Primer vs. Koh Gen Do Makeup Color Base.

Hourglass Veil Mineral Primer verses Koh Gen Do Makeup Color Base.

Facial Makeup Primers are everywhere these days.  It seems as if every cosmetic line makes the claim their primer is the best on the market.  The advertising claim of prolonged makeup, defused pores, color correction, smoother looking skin and good for you ingredients are the catch phases that dominate most campaigns.  Up today are two heavy hitters; Hourglass Veil Mineral Primer verses Koh Gen Do Makeup Color Base.  In the left corner we have the heavyweight champion, weighing in at 1 oz., straight from the USA….Hourglass Veil Mineral Primer ($52 US).  In the right corner we have the contender, weighing in at .88 oz. imported straight from Japan….Koh Gen Do Makeup Color Base ($48 US).  At the end of six rounds (categories) a winner will be declared….ding, ding, ding…let the games begin 🙂

Hourglass Veil Mineral Primer vs. Koh Gen Do Makeup Color Base.

Hourglass Veil Mineral Primer verses Koh Gen Do Makeup Color Base.

Hourglass Veil Mineral Primer vs. Koh Gen Do Packaging:

Hourglass Mineral Veil Primer is housed in a substantially weighted glass bottle.  This packaging, although very sanitary, is not ideal for travel and for accessing the entirety of the product.  Koh Gen Do Makeup Color Base is housed in a light-weight squeeze tube; very convenient for travel and rather useful for getting every last drop of the product out.  I must admit the glass container does look more luxe than the plastic tube, however sometimes functionality trumps looks.

Ding, Ding, Ding:  Round 1 goes to Koh Gen Do.

Hourglass Veil Mineral Primer vs. Koh Gen Do Makeup Color Base.

Hourglass Veil Mineral Primer verses Koh Gen Do Makeup Color Base.

Hourglass Veil Mineral Primer vs. Koh Gen Do Amount/Price Ratio:

Hourglass Veil Mineral Primer contains 1 fluid ounce for $52.  Koh Gen Do contains .88 fl oz.  for $48. Both product’s cost are relatively comparable, however I would think glass is more expensive to produce than a plastic squeeze tube.  Therefore, Koh Gen Do could have thrown their customers a bone and granted us an additional .12 fl. oz. of product.

Ding, Ding, Ding:  Round 2 goes to Hourglass.

Hourglass Veil Mineral Primer vs. Koh Gen Do Makeup Color Base spread out.

Hourglass Veil Mineral Primer verses Koh Gen Do Makeup Color Base spread out.

Hourglass Veil Mineral Primer vs. Koh Gen Do Formula:

Hourglass Veil Mineral Primer has a thin consistency and the feel is truly lightweight.  A very small amount is needed to completely cover the face.  There is a slight diffused look to imperfections and the skin feels silky soft to the touch.  Foundation can be applied immediately after the primer, there is no “dry-time” required with this formula.  Koh Gen Do Makeup Color Base in Yellow has a cream-like consistency giving the skin a slightly diffused look.   The yellow coloring is completely undetectable once the product is blended out, voiding the claim that the yellow coloring minimizes redness.  KGD does not smooth over the skin as easily as Hourglass.  With KGD, one must be very diligent with the amount used, too much product results in a change of consistency (the primer can pill on the skin–less is more).  Foundation cannot be applied immediately after the makeup color base is administered.  A “dry-time’ of two-three minutes is required.

Ding, Ding, Ding:  Round 3 goes to Hourglass.

Hourglass Veil Mineral Primer vs. Koh Gen Do Makeup Color Base blended out.

Hourglass Veil Mineral Primer vs. Koh Gen Do Application:

Hourglass Veil Mineral Primer applies smoothly with fingers or a brush.  Koh Gen Do recommends to use fingers to apply the primer a little at a time (less product is accidentally used).  One must be very diligent to spread the primer in thin layers evenly on the skin, in places that require the most attention (my area is the T-Zone, and slightly extending around the front of the cheeks).   Nonetheless, KGD does not feel as silicone(y) as Hourglass.  Hourglass’s white coloring can turn ashy on darker skinned beauties, if too much product is used.

Ding, Ding, Ding:  Round 4 goes to Koh Gen Do.

Hourglass Veil Mineral Primer verses Koh Gen Do Makeup Color Base with Estee Lauder Double Wear blended on top.

Hourglass Veil Mineral Primer vs. Koh Gen Do Ingredients:

Both Hourglass and Koh Gen Do are silicone based products.  Both companies can try to advertise “mineral” and “good for you ingredients”, but the bottom line is there is nothing natural about either product. Hourglass has 12 ingredients and Koh Gen Do has a heck of a lot more, but both contain the same first few ingredients (titanium dioxide, cyclopentasiloxane, dimethicone).  Props to both companies for not using parabens, mineral oils, phthalates, etc. in their product.

Ding, Ding, Ding:  Round 5 is a tie.

Hourglass Veil Mineral Primer vs. Koh Gen Do Makeup Color Base ingredient list.

Hourglass Veil Mineral Primer verses Koh Gen Do Makeup Color Base ingredient list.

Hourglass Veil Mineral Primer vs. Koh Gen Do Results:

Hourglass Veil Mineral Primer does make foundation last longer and the skin is visibly smoother and more radiant.  The skin does not feel tacky to the touch after foundation application.  The white coloring and heavier silicone additive does give the skin a slightly dewier look.  This can be problematic for oilier skins. Koh Gen Do Makeup Color Base does make foundation last longer and the skin is visibly smoother and satiny looking.  The skin does feel slightly tacky after foundation application (easily solved with the use of a setting powder).  However, KGD Makeup Color Base does control oil amazing well throughout the day and my dry skin does feel noticeably moisturized.  Oilier skin would prefer this primer over Hourglass.  Admittedly, I do as well.  SHOCKER!!!

Ding, Ding, Ding:  Round 6 goes to Koh Gen Do.

Left side: Hourglass Veil Mineral Primer Right Side: Koh Gen Do Makeup Color Base with Estee Lauder Double Wear blended on top.

Left side: Hourglass Veil Mineral Primer
Right Side: Koh Gen Do Makeup Color Base with Estee Lauder Double Wear blended on top.

The Hourglass side (left) is dewier and less diffused (especially visible around the under-eye area).  The Koh Gen Do side (right) does appear more diffused and the satin finish does last throughout the day.  Do you see what I see?

Both Hourglass and Koh Gen Do can be found at Sephora.com and Barneys.com.  If residing in NYC, to my knowledge, only Sephora at Times Square and Chelsea Meat Market sell KGD in store.  Try to get a sample of each and test them out for yourself.

THE VERDICT:  If makeup could talk what would it say?

Makeup would tell you the winner in this battle of the primers is Koh Gen Do Makeup Color Base.  This yellow colored primer does need extra care during application, however the results are worth the additional effort.  Hourglass is still a great primer for drier skins and those who seek a dewier look to their makeup. Presently, I prefer the satiny look KGD provides.  I feel as if I am cheating on my high school sweetheart with the new heart-throb in town, but there is no denying the attraction.  Oh well, I never said Hourglass and I were exclusive…like does not equate love, it’s not you it’s me, I’m not ready to get serious with anyone……anymore lines I can type to justify my betrayal of my three-year relationship with Hourglass Primer?  Nahh…I’m just not that into it anymore.  Be well and stay safe.
