Wayne Goss 01 Brush review, photos and comparisons.

Wayne Goss 01 Foundation Brush.

Wayne Goss 01 Brush.

There are very few things that hold my attention.  I am what you would call an editor in my everyday life.  If there are things (sometimes even people) that do not appeal to me, I simply edit them out of my life. Wayne Goss Brushes do not fall into this category.  Since my success with Wayne Goss Brush 02 (reviewed here), I decided to purchase the Wayne Goss 01 Brush ($45 US).  This magnificent little creature has not only captured my attention, but my unyielding loyalty.  Friends, I believe that is referred to as…..LOVE!!

Wayne Goss 01 Brush Composition:

  • The Wayne Goss 01 Brush is constructed from a combination of white goat hair used for the base layer and white synthetic bristles used for the raised or “dual fiber” layer.  I assume white hairs were purposely used to make it easier for the user to notice when it is time to wash the brush.  Speaking of washing, not one hair has shed from this brush during our three cleaning sessions.
  • The length of the brush measures 5¾ inches, roughly the same measurement as the TF Cream Foundation Brush.  All of Wayne Goss brushes are handmade in Japan.  The handle is made of wood, with the word Japan stamped into the wood, to show country of origin.  The name Wayne Goss and the number 01 are also evident in silver paint.  My only complaint, is that the silver paint does rub off after a few uses. However, since the name and number of the brush are imprinted right into the wood, you will still be able to read the lettering after the paint is gone.

Wayne Goss Brush 01 Design:

  • Wayne Goss has thoughtfully and thoroughly designed this brush.  The genius behind this brush is the cut, length and density of the hairs.  The front end of the natural base hairs start at 3/8 inch of an inch and graduate to an angle of 5/8 of an inch.  The synthetic raised bristles, are equally as dense as the natural base bristles, and start off at 5/8 of an inch and graduate to an angle to 7/8 of an inch.  The combination of these two groups of hairs create an unbelievably soft and substantial brush.

  • The lack of resilience at the front end and base of the brush, allows color to be deposited on the skin without product build-up on the bristles.  The longer end has more flexibility, which allows the brush to move effortlessly on the skin.  Wayne Goss 01 Brush’s perfect ratio of natural hair and synthetic fibers distribute and blend foundation to perfection.  The smaller angled head is ideal for hard-to-reach areas, such as, under the eyes, around the eyes, around the nose, and between the eyebrows.  I prefer smaller head foundation brushes for the control they yield.  Foundation is the one cosmetic that should not be hastily applied.

Uses for Wayne Goss 01 Brush:

  • Brush 01 can be classified as a multi-purose brush.  I have used this brush for application of Estee Lauder Double Wear Foundation, Eve Pearl Cream Foundation, RMS Beauty Buriti Bronzer (here), RMS Living Luminizer (here), Estee Lauder Maximum Cover as a concealer, MAC Prep+Prime Radiant Rose Highlighter (here) and MAC Mineralized Skinfinish Natural as a setting powder.  Wayne Goss 01 is the ultimate work horse, compatible with liquid, cream, and powder formulations.

MAC 130 vs. Wayne Goss 01 Brush.

MAC 130 vs. Wayne Goss 01 Brush.

  • The MAC 130 natural black base hairs are long and mildly dense and the synthetic white raised bristles are longer and are very spars.  Wayne Goss 01 brush is larger, denser, and angled for more efficient product placement.  No competition!
Tom Ford Cream Foundation Brush vs. Wayne Goss 01 Brush.

Tom Ford Cream Foundation Brush vs. Wayne Goss 01 Brush.

  • Tom Ford Cream Foundation Brush (reviewed here) works beautifully with cream products, specifically Tom Ford Cream Foundation Stick, but falls short with other formulations.  Wayne Goss 01 is not as large and fluffy as TF, but the dense natural angled base hairs and raised synthetic angled fibers are equally as soft and luxurious on the skin as TF.  Wayne Goss also works with a variety of formulations.  No competition!
Philosophy Supernatural Airbrush Brush vs. Wayne Goss 01 Brush.

Philosophy Supernatural Airbrush Brush vs. Wayne Goss 01 Brush.

  • Philosophy Supernatural Airbrush Brush was my ideal candidate for liquid foundation application.  The completely synthetic head did not absorb product and gave full coverage.  Wayne Goss 01 does a better job blending foundation for a more seamless and natural look.  Foundation blends right into the skin, rather than sitting on top of the skin.  In addition, for those with severe skin sensitivities, the soft raised synthetic fibers on Brush 01, will not have an exfoliation effect on the skin.  No competition!
Shiseido Foundation Brush vs. Wayne Goss 01 Brush.

Shiseido Foundation Brush vs. Wayne Goss 01 Brush.

  • Shiseido Foundation brush is not one of my favorites.  I find the overly dense hairs do not distribute my Estee Lauder Double Wear Foundation evenly.  In addition, the foundation gets trapped deep into the hair fibers, making cleaning and drying a pain in the keister.  Wayne Goss 01 Brush natural base bristles are too short to hold onto foundation, making cleaning and drying effortless.  No competition!

Real Techniques Expert Face Brush vs. Wayne Goss 01 Brush.

  • Real Technique Expert Face Brush is not my favorite (don’t hate me).  The dome-shaped top does not fit the natural curvature of my face; therefore, foundation application is streaky and uneven.  Personally speaking, RT larger head does not “fit” comfortably in and around all the crevices of the face.  WG flat angled top is the perfect design to get in and around all the corners of the face.  No competition!
