As far as eyeshadows are concerned, my preference lies with cream formulas.  My eye shape and depth seem to “hold” onto the pigmentation of cream shadows better than powder eyeshadows.  The only downfall to this situation is the lack of color choices. Granted many brands have developed their version of a cream eyeshadow, but I find the color choices to be quite redundant.  That is why I utilize gel liners as eyeshadows; the color selection, longevity and textures are more unique than the typical cream eyeshadow.  MAC Its Physical Fluidline ($16 US/3g.) from the Magnetic Nude Collection is another perfect example of the diverse functionality of gel liners.

The Pros:

  1. Gorgeous taupe base color with violet shimmers throughout.
  2. Formula is nicely pigmented if used as an eyeshadow.
  3. Creates a soft, smooth and subtle liner for those who find a black liner too harsh.
  4. Smooth consistency and application.
  5. Micro-fine shimmers are not gritty and adhere well to the skin.
  6. If used as an eyeshadow, violet shimmers migrate slightly upward toward the crease rather than on the face.
  7. Cool tone color surprisingly will suit warm and cool skin tones alike.
  8. Lasting power is 8 hours + with a primer.
  9. Violet shimmers become even more prominent and long-lasting when paired with a brown base color (I use Estee Lauder Double Wear Cream Shadow in Bronze).
  10. Layers well without looking caky.
  11. Pairs very well with Chilled Fluidline (dabbed in the inner corner) from the same collection.

The Cons:

  1. An eyeshadow primer is a must with this formula.  Nars eyeshadow primer is fantastic!
  2. Cannot be used as an eyeshadow base for powdered eyeshadows.  Sweeping motions may disrupt the shimmers and cause fallout.
  3. Dabbing motions are best used to ensure color and shimmer payoff.
  4. Due to the sheer nature of the base color, darker-skinned beauties will have a hard time having this color show-up as a liner.
  5. Cannot be used on the waterline due to the heavy shimmer content.

Application:

When used as an eyeshadow, Its Physical does take patience to apply.  I like to apply the first layer with my ring finger and let it set for 30 seconds.  The second layer can be applied with fingers or a synthetic brush using dabbing motions.  Sweeping motions will most assuredly result in a patchy application with shimmers remaining on your finger/brush.  So be gentle!  I suspect a similar taupe/mushroom base color was used for both Its Physical and Deliciously Rich Fluidline (here), with the difference being Its Physical contains violet shimmer and Deliciously Rich contains gold shimmer.

When used as an eyeliner, application is fairly straight forward.  I like to use my Laura Mercier Eye Liner Brush to apply 2-3 layers to the upper lash line for a noticeable, yet subtle eyeliner.  I prefer to pair Its Physical with a thin black line close to the lash line.

THE VERDICT:  If makeup could talk what would it say?

Makeup would tell you MAC Its Physical is a winner in my book.  This unique shade proved to be not only beautiful, but extremely versatile and long-wearing.  When paired with Nars eyeshadow primer, this gel liner performed spectacularly.  Have you tried any of the fluidlines from the Magnetic Nude Collection?  Up next, Nars Eyeshadow primer review, yes it deserves a review all of its own.  Be well and stay safe.

  1. Hi babe, i know its a long time back, but what mascara did you use in this post? also how did you apply it? your eyelashes look divine

    • Hello Maria,

It has been awhile, but I distinctly remember using Mary Kay Lash Love Lengthening Mascara–one of my favorites. I apply it by starting at the base of the roots and wiggling the wand upwards. I also have a habit of keeping my eye closed and running the an extra coat just on the tips of the lashes. Thanks for reminding me of this beauty, I’m going to get a tube ASAP!!

  2. Thanks for including that comment about the fluidline not being ideal for dark skin. I almost bought it online since it is sold out in store. Saved some money! Thanks!

    • Hello Sharee,
You are very welcome. It is a shame the manufactures did not have the foresight to create a substantial base color to show on darker skins. Thank you for your support and for the comment.

What a great post on It’s Physical! I bought it last week, but haven’t worn it yet. I was looking on the internet to see if there were any posts on this, and your’s was perfect. Thanks for mentioning that I should pat it on, rather than swipe it on!

    • Hello Christina,
I think you will love this color. Remember to use a base and wait for each layer to dry. Please let me know how your look turns out. Thank you for your support and commenting.
