Dose of Colors Truffle and Stone Matte Liquid Lipstick review, swatches and lip combos.

Dose of Colors

As I have stated many times over, nude lipsticks and olive skin are a bit of a paradox.  The underlying green tones in our skin, clashes with the overly pink and/or white notes used in this lipstick category–hence the allure of darker shades.  However, when Dose of Colors Truffle and Stone Matte Liquid Lipsticks ($18 USD/ 4.5ml) came on the scene, something within knew these two beauties would be exactly what I have been waiting for.  I hope you enjoy.

Dose of Colors

  • Truffle is a beautiful warm caramel brown with pink undertones, very similar to MAC’s Velvet Teddy.  This color will surly be the perfect “nude” shade for all my girls with warm, olive, medium and darker skins.
  • Truffle’s smooth mousse-like texture feels heavenly on initial application and dries down to a completely matte finish within 5 minutes.
  • As with Berry Me and Merlot (reviewed here), opacity is reached with one coat, but personally, I like to apply an additional thin veil of color to make certain all edges are covered completely.
  • Truffle’s matte finish lasts, on its own, for a good 5 hours.  On warmer days, I barely notice a drying sensation on my lips.  However, on cooler drier days, my lips feel a bit parched around the 3½ hour mark.  Clearly this experience will vary, however, Dose of Colors’ formula is hands down the most comfortable matte liquid lipstick formula I have ever tried.

Dose of Colors

  • Stone is a predominantly pink color with strong grey undertones–very popular color lately.  This is the ideal “nude” for all my light, cool skinned girls.  This pairs especially well against blue, green and hazel eyes.
  • Stone is a bit thinner in consistency than Truffle and dries down to a completely matte finish within 5 minutes.
  • Opacity is reached with one coat.  The lasting power of this color was not as impressive as Truffle–on bare lips, I experienced significant fading by the third hour.  Perhaps the thinner consistency requires layers to have more endurance.  In all honesty, I never wear this color on its own, a warmer topper shade is required to make Stone more suitable for my coloring (see below).
  • There are some reviews stating these two colors are very similar, however as you can tell, that is not the case.  The ultimate decision as to which color to choose, rest on one’s skin tone, eye color and personal preference.  The enabler within, says get both and enjoy.   🙂

Dose of Colors Truffle and Stone color transfer.

  • The above photos demonstrate the gradual color depth over a span of five minutes.  On initial application, both colors appear rather pale, boarding on unwearable (at least against my skin).  However, after giving the formula time to develop/dry, the pigment deepens into more flattering variations.
  • As you can tell by the last photo, the formula is not 100% transfer-free.  There is a faint reminisce of lipstick on cups and cheeks, but obviously not as noticeable as a regular lipstick.  I believe the slight malleability is what makes this formula so comfortable to wear, especially when compared to other matte liquid lipstick formulas on the market (looking at you Lime Crime).

Dose of Colors Truffle Lip Swatch and Combinations:

**Excuse the slight skin coloring variations–I am dependent mainly on natural lighting for my photos.  Darker photos reflect cloudy/rainy conditions, brighter photos reflect sunny conditions.**

  • Truffle’s slight pink undertone and contrasting warmth keeps this color from looking like concealer was smeared across my lips.

  • For the above photo, Shiseido RD306 was added to Truffle for added moisture and shine.  After the 3 hour mark, the shine noticeably expired, what was left was a creamy stain finish that lasted a total of 6 hours.

  • For the above photo, YSL #12 Moca Garconne was added to Truffle for the ultimate velvet matte lip look.  The lasting power of this combo was slightly less than with Shiseido, but I’m truly addicted to the finish of this luscious look.

Dose of Colors Stone Lip Swatch and Combinations:

  • Against my skin, the underlying grey tones magically shift and transform the color into a lavender hue–not the most flattering shade for me.

  • Pairing Shiseido RD306 with Stone gives the color just enough warmth to make it wearable.  As you can tell, the end results are beyond flattering and to boot, this combo lasted for 6 hours.

  • For the above photo, Stone was used a lip base for Estee Lauder Pure Color Envy Lipstick.  The underlying pink matte base gave the lipstick unprecedented lasting power (7 hours) and depth.

Applicator Comparison:
Girlactik Demure, Shiseido Lacquer Rouge RD702, Dose of Colors Truffle.

  • The one criticism of the Dose of Colors line would pertain to the applicator head.  Although the large head is great for picking-up product, the erratically splayed fibers are not cut precisely enough for my liking.
  • Shiseido Lacquer Rouge applicator head is an example of true quality.  RD702 has been in my possession for almost four years, and as you can tell, the tip is in optimal condition.  The closely cut fibers pick-up and distribute the perfect amount of pigment every time.
  • Girlactik’s Demure has been in my company for 8 months and the fibers have already worn down, making the remaining color difficult to apply.

THE VERDICT:  If Makeup Could Talk what would it say?

Makeup would tell you Dose of Colors Truffle and Stone Matte Liquid Lipstick have exceeded all of my expectations.  The mousse-like texture, comfortable long-lasting wear, flattering colors, paraben-free and vegan formula is enough to initiate additional purchases.  So enamored was I with Truffle, a second tube was procured to have with me at all times.  No matter how they are worn, be it on their own or as lip bases, this formula is truly outstanding.  Now the burning question–will you be getting one or both?  Until next time, be well, stay safe and be happy.

  1. awesome comparison review!! just what i wanted to know. now you got a fan from Korea 🙂

  2. Excellent and thorough review. Best beauty review Ive read and pictures were great. I totally agree about Stone being a little less flattering than Truffle on olive complexion

  3. Victoria says:

Thanks for this review, I was contemplating between the two shades and seeing a comparison on a similar skintone has really helped. Very thorough.

  4. Truffle looks absolutely exquisite on you! Its perfectttttttt!

  5. What a great review. I often find that with liquid lipsticks, the nudes I buy pull very cool on me. These two look great, especially Truffle. I have noticed with a lot of liquid lipsticks the applicators can be hit or miss too 🙂
