Blame the cold weather, the season, the holidays, the lack of vibrancy in the environment (oh, how I miss green leaves), or my recent obsession with Mad Men, but my urge to wear red lips is stronger than ever.  My quest to find the perfect bordeaux/burgundy red that is not too vampy, highly pigmented, moisturizing, and long-lasting seems to have taken over.  This week I decided to try  Kevyn Aucoin Blood Roses Lipstick ($35 US/ 3.5g).  This iconic shade is said to have been Mr. Aucoin’s favorite red, specially designed to suit every skin tone.  Who am I to argue with such genius.

The Pros:

  1. Ultra-smooth formula that glides on the lips effortlessly.
  2. Highly pigmented and moisturizing formula.
  3. Gorgeous red/wine shade starts off semi-glossy and dries down to a satin finish.
  4. Color wears off evenly on the lips.
  5. An additional layer applies smoothly over an existing layer.
  6. This color is a bit of a chameleon, he changes tone according to different lighting conditions.
  7. Pleasant light floral fragrance.  Complete change from their previous formula that reeked of plastic.
  8. Paraben-free formula.
  9. Blood Roses has a versatile texture and color.  The color adapts beautifully to any red lipliner shade.
  10. Can be worn as a light stain or full coverage with one swipe.
  11. Does last 5 hours only when paired with a lipliner.
  12. Kevyn Aucoin Expert Lip colors are house in smaller casings which can easily fit into any handbag.

The Cons:

  1. Love the color scheme of the packaging, but the design is not to my liking.  The small base reminds me of Maybelline lipstick, not my favorite.
  2. The magnet is not as strong as it should be, a snapping closure would have been ideal.
  3. Due to the emollient nature of the formula, Blood Roses does bleed into the fine lines around the lip area without a lipliner.
  4. Since the formula is very soft, the lipstick bullet tends to lean on the inner casing if a heavy hand is used during application.

My favorite way to sport this succulent shade is with Rimmel Rapture Lipliner  and Estee Lauder Ruby Glow Lacquer (reviewed here) dabbed lightly in the center of the lips.

THE VERDICT:  If makeup could talk what would it say?

Makeup would tell you Kevyn Aucoin Blood Roses is an absolute winner.  Do you need this color?  Do fish need water?  Do birds fly?   Does a shoe store sell shoes?  Yes, yes, yes and yes!  Blood Roses glides on the lips like butter, an absolute pleasure to apply and wear.  Have you tried any Kevyn Aucoin lipsticks?  Be well and stay safe.
