As cosmetic enthusiasts, we have certain lipstick colors and formulation we absolutely love.  Personally, I will always be drawn to dark rich colors, they seem to suit my coloring and personality the best.  However, the majority of people seem to gravitate toward pale nude shades reminiscent of the 60’s.  Lipstick Queen Velvet Rope Star System Lipstick ($50 USD/ 3.5g) is a nude lipstick lover’s dream.  The matte formula has a perfect finish, silky smooth texture and amazing longevity.  Bridget Bardot eat-your-heart-out 🙂

Star System is a gorgeous pinky/beige nude color.  The lightweight formula applied smoothly and opaquely in one swipe.  Star System performed beautifully, lasting 3½-4 hours on its own and 6 hours when paired with It Cosmetics YLBB Waterproof Lip Liner Stain In Blushing Nude (reviewed here); quite an impressive feat for a nude lipstick color.  Just like Private Party (reviewed here), Star System is formulated with a slight sweet peppermint scent, which is such a refreshing and unique feature. The packaging is luxe and substantially weighted, an indication a quality product is present 🙂

My only compliant lies with the overall finish on my lips.  I found the color looked chalky, even though in reality, the color felt velvety smooth and hydrating. To combat the superficial dehydrated appearance, I simply applied Dior Addict Fluid Stick in 219 Whisper Beige to even out the texture on the lips.  The resulting hue was chock-full of creamy goodness–a discovery any die-hard nude lip lover would be proud to wear 🙂

Even though I adore the formulation of this lipstick line, I have to come to the realization, Star System is not suited for my skin tone. My features are too pronounced to pull off such a delicate color. I can envision lighter complexions, especially those with green and blue eyes, looking exceptional in this shade.  When my son saw this color, his immediate reaction was, “Mommy you know light colors really don’t look great on you.” However painfully blunt his comment, he was quite exacting in his assessment of this shade (on me at least). For the above photos, the makeup remained the same with the obvious change being the lip color.  Which color do you think better suited my complexion?

THE VERDICT:  If makeup could talk what would it say?

Makeup would tell you if you prefer paler toned lipstick colors, then Lipstick Queen Velvet Rope Star System Lipstick is the color for you.  I cannot imagine another brand formulating a more luxurious and comfortable nude lipstick.  Sadly for me, this color did not work and will be exchanged for Brat Pack. Should you feel the urge to splurge on this lipstick (or any other color), do take advantage of Beauty.com $10 off a $50 purchase coupon code at the bottom of this post.  Where do your preferences lie–with the nude or the naughty shades?  Be well, stay safe and be happy.

  1. In all honesty when I first looked at the photos, I thought the pale colour looked AMAZING on you. The darker colour does too but in a different way. The soft colour makes you look so demure especially coupled with your smokey eyeliner. I personally love it on you.

    • Hello Mel,

Thank you so much for the lovely compliment. I suppose, my eye is so accustomed to wearing darker colors that when a pale shade is introduced, the effect is shocking.

I cannot tell you how comfortable this formula feels, Poppy should consider adding more colors to this line.

Thank you for stopping by and taking the time to comment.

  2. A few years back I would have jumped on this lipstick for I love nudes. Now, I know I don’t look good in nudes because of age and a matter of change of taste. I do like the color on you with the gloss but alone it does look dry.

    • Hello Olivia,
I completely understand what you mean. When I was younger, I could have pulled off this color without any issues, but now, really pale nude colors make me look drained. Age has taught me not to run with the pack, but rather, purchase and use what works for my complexion and tastes.

  3. I love this color and the formula is to die for (I own Brat Pack). I do prefer the darker colors on you, and think BP would be a better option for you. Great post and I love the stars in the background.

    • Hello Vicky,
I so glad you like this color. I agree the formula on these lipsticks is so unique, you really have to experience it to understand. It is my personal belief everyone looks better with medium tone colors on their lips. I thought the stars went well with name of the lipstick 🙂 Thank you so much for taking the time to comment.

  4. You know I do like the color on you but seems to me you’re right it does look a little chalky. I’ve never tried this brand and only recently did I learn how expensive it was so I don’t think it’ll be a go for me anytime soon and anyways I love my Dior! 🙂 I like nude colors but can’t wear the really pale ones (honestly few women can besides Bardot) I need a little pigment since my lips are medium colored, my go to is Dior Charnelle which I have to replace but I’ve been considering trying an Armani. 🙂

    • Hello Helene,
I do love this formula (truly feels like silk on the lips), I only wish I loved this particular color on me. My lips are also quite pigmented naturally, therefore it would stand to reason, medium tone colors (and darker) would suit me best. I do not own Dior Charnelle, but you better believe I will look into that color ASAP 🙂 Thank you for the support and comment.

  5. Thank you for the suggestion. I love this product, and I hope this color will suit my features.
