L’Oreal Extraordinarie Colour Riche Liquid Lipstick review and swatches.

L'Oreal Extraordinaire Colour Riche: #306 scarlet Concerto and #502 Plum Adagio.

While I was at the drugstore picking up some medicine (..I swear), I stumbled upon the display for L’Oreal Extraordinarie Colour Riche Liquid Lipsticks($7.99-$10.99 US).  The promise of long-lasting saturated color and shine piqued my curiosity.  Predictably, I chose the two darkest shades–#306 Scarlet Concerto and #502 Plum Adagio.  Immediately, I saw a striking similarity in packaging to YSL Glossy Stains (those feathered all over my lips and the scent was bothersome); however, the formula description sounded reminiscent of my beloved Shiseido Lacquer Rouge (here) and my Estee Lauder Ruby Glow (here).  Was my premature enthusiasm justified or would these lipsticks be a complete disappointment?  You’ll see 🙂 .

The Pros:

  1. Sleeker packaging than the typical drugstore variety, reminiscent of YSL Glossy Stains.
  2. Impressive color selection; 16 shades in all.
  3. Faux colored window in the front of the package matches the color of the product inside.
  4. Permanent in the range.
  5. Nice applicator.
  6. Highly available anywhere L’Oreal Cosmetics are sold.

The Cons:

  1. The scent used for L’Oréal Extraordinarie Colour Riche Liquid Lipsticks was unbearable (fruity chemical scent mixed with perfume anyone?).
  2. Lasting power was comical (an hour and a half).
  3. A second coat yielded patchy results.
  4. Both colors are prone to bleeding out into fine lines.
  5. Easily transferable on cups and etc..
  6. The slippery texture feels uncomfortable and looks poor-quality.
  7. These are slightly more pigmented glosses rather than liquid lipsticks.
  8. The price discrepancy between retailers is ridiculous ($10.99 at some drugstores, $9.99 online, $7.99 at Target).
  9. Ludicrous price for such a poor product; MAC lipsticks are $15.

Liquid Lipstick Comparison:
Extraordinarie #502, Extraordinarie #306, Estee Lauder Ruby Glow, Estee Lauder Liquid Petal, Shiseido RD501.

As you can tell the L’Oréal colors are sheer, patchy and prone to bleeding (even on an arm swatch).  Estee Lauder and Shiseido are pigmented, shiny, and have an overall stronger composition.

THE VERDICT:  If makeup could talk what would it say?

Makeup would tell you L’Oreal Extraordinarie Colour Riche Liquid Lipsticks were beyond disappointing.  It goes without saying, these went back.  Love them or leave them, what say you?  Be well and stay safe.

Comments

  1. These were total rubbish (as my mom says). The smell got to me as well and I paid $11 for my tube #500. I could have bought a MAC lippie for that price.

    • Hello Vanessa,
I do find the price for these “lipsticks” outrageous. I’ll take MAC over these any day. Thank you for sharing and your comment.

  2. I love these things, but my mom and sister think they are horrible. It could be because I have one of the lightest color 601. I do see your point about the smell and price. WTH is going on with drugstore makeup prices?

    • Hello Amy,
I am so glad these lipsticks have worked for you. Personally, I just cannot get over the pungent artificial scent. Drugstore makeup prices have been subject to some serious inflation. I would have put the price of these “lipsticks” at about $6.99; even then, the formula just does not seem right to me. Thank you for the support and the comment.

  3. OMG…Can I say…spot on review. I bought the lightest color 103 and the darkest 502. The light one was good..not great and the 502 was disastrous! The real problem was the smell…awful!!! I read and saw so many reviews saying these were great, but boy was I “disappointed” like you said..Thanks for keeping it real!

    • Hello Tiffany,
It is very upsetting to invest in a product that has received so many accolades, only to be personally disappointed. Beauty reviews are very subjective; what bothers me may seem insignificant to someone else and vise-versa. The saving grace in all of this, is our freedom to return any cosmetic if we are not satisfied. No harm, no foul! Thank you for your support and comment.
