If you have read my blog and have been with me from the beginning, you may have noticed I made mention of Shiseido Lacquer Rouge Liquid Lipsticks ($25 US/ 6ml) in many posts. These Lacquers are so versatile, they can be applied on their own, over matte formulas and over stains.  The results are always stellar! These beauties came out last year and were instantly compared to Guerlain Rouge G L’Extrait Lip Color. Shiseido’s formula is exactly what a liquid lipstick should be and more.  Since the purchase of my first Lacquer Rouge (RD203 pinky nude color) I was hooked.  Without further ado, I present my review and photos of these amazing Lip Lacquers.  I hope you find this helpful.  Enjoy!

Shiseido Lacquer Rouge Formula:

The creation of Shieseido Lacquer Rouge was inspired by Japanese Lacquerware.  These Lacquers truly have a refined shine combined with high pigmentation.  One can wear these lacquers with the reassurance their lips will look polished, moisturized and full.  The medium consistency of these lacquers are not heavy, sticky or uncomfortable.  On the contrary, Lacquer Rouge go on smoothly, feel creamy and are long-lasting (but not drying).  In my experience, after the shine and color have worn off, the lips are left with a lovely delicate stain.  Another selling point for me, is the lack of fragrance, flavor, petrolatum and parabens. ♥ Shade RD501 contains micro-shimmers, not offensive to me, but may be bothersome to others.

Shiseido Lacquer Rouge Lip Swatches:

Personally, I found Lacquer Rouge to pair beautifully with MAC Prolong Wear Lipliners.  I am not going pretend to know why these two formulas combine so harmoniously, but take my word for it, they do.  When I pair MAC Nice-n-Spicy lipliner with Shiseido Lacquer Rouge in RD203, the color lasts a good 5 hours.  I have tried pairing other long-lasting lip pencils with Shiseido Lacquer Rouges, and none are able to perform as well as MAC Prolong Wear Pencils.  Lacquer Rouge also pair well with my beloved Daliia Lips Stains (reviewed here and here); Daliia’s stains retain their composure and do not bleed into the fine lines around the lips.  Adding Shiseido Lacquer Rouge on top of any stain will ensure longevity, dimension and moisturized lips.

Shiseido Lacquer Rouge Applicator:

The most outstanding feature, other than the formula and pigmentation, is the applicator head.  Shiseido has hit a home run with the design of this brush head.  The applicator is firm and the fibers covering the head are meticulously shaped and cut, ideal for detailed work.  I am able to apply the color so precisely and evenly using only the brush provided.  Of course, I require a lipliner to prevent feathering, but if you are fortunate enough not to have this issue, then you can apply these colors effortlessly.

As with most higher end cosmetics, most companies feel compelled to add a signature fragrance to their product, not so with Shiseido.  Guerlain is the worst offender with an overpowering perfume fragrance added to all of their lip products.  As much as I adore the look of Guerlain Rouge L’Extrait’s matte finish, I cannot tolerate the fragrance and usually remove the color after only a couple of hours of wear.  The applicator on these lipsticks are also sub par compared to Shiseido Lacquer Rouge.  Personally, I find it impossible to create a crisp edge on my lips with Guerlain’s applicator.  Guerlain’s packaging is also a bit over the top, heavyweight and non-refillable (what a waste).  Shiseido’s packaging is lightweight, simple, and sleek. ♥

Shiseido Lacquer Rouge Price/Amount Ratio:

At the risk of sounding too frugal, the amount offered for the price is outstanding (especially for a higher end brand).  Comparatively, Chanel glosses, Tom Ford Lipgloss (not a liquid lipstick, but I wanted to show what you get for $45) and Guerlain Rouge G L’Extrait costs are obscene in relation to the quality and amount Shiseido offers with Lacquer Rouge.  All brands mentioned offer 6ml./.2 oz./6g. worth of product.  Shiseido Lacquer Rouge is $25 US, Chanel Rouge Allure Extrait De Gloss is $32 US, Tom Ford Ultra Shine Lip Gloss is $45 US, and Guerlain G L’Extrait Lip Color is $49.50 US.  You choose 🙂

Shiseido Cosmetics can be found at Nordstrom, Bloomingdales, Lord & Taylor, Saks, and online only at Sephora.com.

THE VERDICT:  If makeup could talk what would it say?

Makeup would tell you to go and get at least one Shiseido Lacquer Rouge and report back to me stat. These are my favorite lipstick formulation, that is saying a lot considering the collection I have amassed over the years.  I like to fill in my lips with my lipliner first and then apply my Lacquer of choice on top. Finished, Finite, Fini, 成品, 完成した, τελικού…..you get the point.  Be well, stay safe and be happy.
