As you may have surmised, my disappointment with Tom Ford Show Me The Pink Nail Lacquer (reviewed here) forced me to go back to Saks and exchange it for something that was more to my liking.  The new Tom Ford trio eye palettes were lovely, but the colors were very basic and quite dupable.  Keeping in mind my dedication to purchase only items that will be utilized on a daily basis, I quickly became fascinated by Tom Ford Eye Defining Pen (01) Deeper ($55 US).  The two-sided brush head coupled with the inky black liquid formula, made this purchase a no-brainer.

 The Pros/Application:

To start off with Tom Ford Eye Defining Pen is blacker than black.  It is a struggle finding a truly black liquid liner that is both long-wearing and hassle-free to remove in the evening.  This is it!  I have removed this liner with my trusty Bioderma and an ordinary drugstore dual-action remover.  Both worked beautifully to remove the black pigment without tugging, smearing, or residue.  In addition to this wonderful quality, the lasting power is rather spectacular!  I was able to wear the Tom Ford Eye Defining Pen full force for ten glorious hours.  I would not go as far as to say the TF liner is waterproof (as the sales associate claimed), however I will admit the longevity is impressive.

The natural finish of this liner is certainly not matte, more of a satin finish.  Opacity is reached very quickly; however, I did find the more layers applied the glossier it becomes.  I happen to like the look of an intense glossy liner, some may not.  This pen is made in Japan and is paraben-free 🙂  The packaging is sturdy yet attractive and the strong snapping mechanism of the caps, will ensure the brush heads remain contained during travel.

The most unusual and obvious feature has to do the architecture of the pen.  There are two sides; one side consists of a longer compact brush head for overall application (similar to Shiseido’s refillable design from four years ago) and the other is a very small pointed felt tip head designed for the most precise application imaginable.  Both brush heads are very well saturated with the intent to deposit an ample amount of product in one swipe.  Of course, I cannot apply the TF liner in one fluid motion.  I prefer to start off in the middle of the eye and use short brush strokes across my lid, until I have reached my desired shape and intensity. Mistakes are easily removed with a Q-Tip soaked in makeup remover or your favorite lotion.

The Cons:

Tom Ford Eye Defining Pen (01) Deeper has very few short-comings.  The price is typical Tom Ford, his beauty range is infamous for inflated prices.  However, when something works it is worth the premium charged.  My only complaint has to do with the length of the pen.  If you are near-sighted and need both hands to apply your liner (one hand to hold the pen, the other to stabilize the corner of your eye) the spacial length between pen and mirror make application challenging.  I would have preferred the pen to be shorter (and thus less $) to avoid bumping the pen into my mirror while applying my liner.  Of course, if you are twenty-something and your eye sight and skin are in top form, you will not have any issues (goody gum drops for you) 🙂

Tom Ford Eye Defining Pen Comparisons:

I instantly noticed a striking similarity in design to my beloved Physician’s Formula Eye Booster 2-in-1 Lash Boosting Eyeliner.  Laura Mercier Graphic Black Liner (reviewed here) is similar in color and wear to Tom Ford, however the felt tip applicator is completely different from TF and removal can be challenging.

The shorter length of Physician’s Formula and Laura Mercier liners make for easier application.

All three pens are pigmented with LM being the most intense and long wearing.  Physician’s Formula (I own the brown version) removes very easily with water, but comes with a well constructed brush head.  Tom Ford remains right in the middle: long-lasting, intense black color, great brush head, and removes easily with a makeup remover.

The Brush head on TF and PF are identical.  PF flows just as easily as TF, but the formula does not have TF’s lasting power and the second felt tip head on TF is priceless.

THE VERDICT:  If makeup could talk what would it say?

Can you guess?  OK..Makeup ♥ Tom Ford Eye Defining Pen (01) Deeper.  I have had this pen in my possession for two weeks and I have not considered using anything else to line my eyes.  I would love to see a brown version of this liner come out soon, for those days when a gal does not want such intensity in her life.  I’m sure with all the rave reviews on (01) Deeper, this desire will soon become a reality.  I hope you found this helpful.  Be well and stay safe.
