Chanel Illusion D’Ombre Eyeshadows review and swatches.

Chanel Illusion D'Ombre: Mirifique, Fantasme, Vision, and Apparence.

Chanel Illusion D’Ombre Eyeshadoes: Mirifique, Fantasme, Vision, and Apparence.

I have a weakness for cream shadows.  So when  Chanel Illusion D’Ombre Eyeshadows ($36 US/ 4 g) launched with the promise of intense pigment, and smooth long-lasting wear, I quickly hoarded the lightest and darkest of the bunch.  The springy gel like formulation were unique in a market filled with long-lasting cream/powder hybrids.  These forms of eyeshadows have proven to be so popular, Dior has recently duplicated this formula and has released their own collection.  My most used shades are Mirifique and Apparence.  Vision is my favorite topper shade; this gleaming golden sparkle looks particularly stunning over a black base.  Fantasme is great as an inner corner highlight or as a topper shade over a reddish-brown shadow.  Oh who am I kidding, I love them all 🙂

  • Mirifique (85): Black base with silver and blue sparkles.
  • Fantasme (81): Topper shade..straight-up white/silver sparkle.
  • Vision (89): Topper shade…straight-up yellow gold sparkle with a slight rose undertone.
  • Apparence (817):  Warm golden color with refined shimmer..beautiful on its own or delicately placed over a matte shadow.

The Pros:

  1. Texturally, the formula is silky smooth and creamy to the touch.
  2. Best applied with fingers in thin layers.
  3. Packaging is exquisite. Glass pot is sanitary and quite sturdy.
  4. The 11 colors offered will suit a variety of skin tones and eye shapes.
  5. My selections of topper shades (Fantasme and Vision) transformed matte eyeshadows into sparkling sensations.
  6. Despite the high sparkle content on swatches, the appearance of sparkle on the lid is diminished with Emerveille, Ebloui, Apparence, Illusiore, and Mirifique.
  7. These are permanent in the Chanel line.  Limited-Edition colors are still available.
  8. Emerville, Ebloui, Apparence and Illusiore can be used on their own for a quick, easy and polished look.
  9. Topper shades last all day..sparkle, sparkle, sparkle.
  10. The accompanying brush is cute as well as functional, especially if Mirifique is used as an eyeliner.
  11. Price/amount ratio is an exceptional value considering very little product is needed.

The Cons:

  1. Chanel Illusion D’Ombre eyeshadows shrink and pop-out over time if they are not tightly sealed after every use.  I keep each pot in their original box and store them upside-down to ensure they will not dry out.
  2. It took five exchanges to find a pot of Vision that was not dried out.  If the entire eyeshadow falls out in one chunk, then the product is dried out.  Even the sales associates were frustrated with how many pots were unsellable.  Make sure to check to see if the eyeshadow is intact before leaving the store.
  3. Petrolatum is an ingredient.
  4. Creasing will occur if a primer is not applied beforehand.
  5. Eight hour wear with fading towards the outer corners of my eye with Mirifique and Apparence.
  6. Sparkles from the topper shades tend to migrate toward the crease and brow bone as the day progresses.  If used in excess, fall-out is inevitable.

THE VERDICT:  If makeup could talk what would it say?

Makeup would tell you if you want to try one of these types of eyeshadows, start with a color that will give you the most mileage.  I usually reach for Apparence when I want a little something extra added to a neutral eye.  I use Mirifique with my finger, on top of a black liner to add some dimension and smokiness to my look.  Vision’s unique golden sparkle will pair beautifully with just about any color.  I prefer to use my ring finger with a patting motion across the lid.  Proper storage for these shadows is crucial if you want your investment to last.  Chanel Illusion D’Ombre Eyeshadows are quite lovely, but the longevity could be improved.  In the meantime, Ebloui is calling my name…Do you have any of these, what are your thoughts?  Be well and stay safe.

THE VERDICT:  If makeup could talk what would it say?

Makeup would tell you to relax and enjoy the warmer, stress-free months of summer and not worry so much about makeup.  Of course, when you have a treasure trove of goodies at your disposal, that could be difficult.  Do I want to go the simple route?  YES…I wake up every morning and chant, “I will not wear makeup today, I will not wear makeup today….”  However, something comes over me and the self-imposed command is quickly obliterated….”HELP, I NEED HELP!!!!”  Nah…I need a larger vanity.  Be well, cool and stay safe.

MAC Uninterrupted is a welcome interruption!!!

MAC Uninterrupted swatch

What can one say about a boring, matte, camel colored eyeshadow?  PERFECTION!!  NO ladies and gents I am not exaggerating, MAC Uninterrupted ($21 US) is really a lovely shade.  It is highly pigmented, applies smoothly, longevity is phenomenal, and the size (3.4 grams) is truly enticing.  When “they” (who is they?) say size does not matter, they lie…..It does!!!!  MAC has really created a hit with this Pro longwear eyeshadow.  Uninterrupted is one of the stand out shades that WILL suit brown (yours truly), green, and blue eyes beautifully.  I applied it with my Shu Uemura #10 flat shader brush and it went on like butter.  Uninterrupted remained true to color a solid 12 hours.  As always, I use my Too Faced Shadow Insurance as a base and MAC Soft Ochre paint pot as an all over lid shade.  Being that the formulation is matte, you can easily layer a lighter shimmery shade on top and create a truly unique shade.  The lightest shade from the Tom Ford Cognac Sable quad works very nicely on top of Uninterrupted.

Chanel’s Illusion D’ombre shadow in Vision is also a lovely topper shade for an evening look.  I’ll wear this combo here, there, anywhere…you get the point :0)

If you are adverse to applying Uninterrupted on the entire mobile lid, it can also be used as a crease/transition color.   Point is this is a very versatile color.  The size is larger and a better value than the average MAC eyeshadow (1.5 grams/$15US).  You will surely get your money’s worth!   The prolong wear line has 23 shades in its lineup.  Uninterrupted can be purchased anywhere MAC Cosmetics is sold.  I purchased mine at Nordstrom.
